In terms of Phillips, he has played well. He seems to be football smart. He is a very good blocker as both a TE and when he lines up as a FB. He has sure hands and does not look like a stiff out there at all when he is receiving.

...seems to have confidence and a developing hot hand with the release routes. You have to give him a chance because he has made the most with his opportunities.

Games are won not on potential, but by players actually doing their assigned jobs. Whether it's blocking, route running or catching balls near and far every little assignment accomplished builds the team momentum and confidence.

Austin, Crayton, Phillips and Witten gives Romo the most confidence to look to spread the ball around and forces the defence to cover the largest portion of the field.

Catch the QBs balls and he will look for you more. If everyone is catching the passes at a high level, then he will look to take a peek at everyone and spread the ball.

Hard to beat a QB and offence that does that.

Bennett has to show that being a football player comes first and that he is willing to put in the work and everything else involved. so far he has not shown that.

Vernon Davis got a coach that busted his ***.

Anyone see Wade pulling on Bennett what Singletary did on Davis?

Anyone see Bennett acting like Davis did last season? No.

All I know for certain is that the trio of Witten, Bennett and Phillips is better than the trio of Witten, Fasano and Curtis in 2007. Much better.

How did the Niners finish this year? I'm sure with such a great coach, they must be in the playoffs right?

Not talking about the Niners, I'm talking about Davis was crashing and burning until someone straightened him out.

I'm talking we don't have that kind of accountability here, so a promising athlete is underperforming while being an intertube sensation.

They may not be in the playoffs yet - and given the horrible talent Singletary took over there I think another year to judge is justified - but now they have an All Pro TE instead of a 1st round bust.

I don't think you know what an irrelevant argument is.
Second year player. Not performing up to expectations. Typical fan overreaction.

Yup, I'd say I fully understand what is going on here.

And, by the way, straw man doesn't mean just an "irrelevant argument."

2nd year player. Actually regressing, producing less than the year before, still a nitwit. Someone points that out and immediately gets called out for labelling him a bust.

Yea I get it too.

Someone says Bennett hasn't played to potential, and indeed his potential may be over-rated by many.

You argue that everyone called Spencer a bust in his 2nd year based on one stat, but were wrong, therefore its wrong to call Bennett a bust.

Except the argument was never that Bennett is a bust or that he will not perform, or that that opinion was based on one stat - 15 catches. As many pointed out his rout running has been terrible, he seems to freelance and he can't hang on to the ball, all contributing to his lack of catches. And most of all he has regressed from last year - which is not the same as calling him a bust. Therefore strawman.

It is also irrelevant to compare Bennett to Vernon Davis when Bennett has not come close to acting like Davis did last season. The Dallas coaches don't need to be like Singletary because Bennett's situation and attitude are not like Davis' was last year.

I agree, but I didn't bring him up. Someone said Davis stunk at first too but got better as justification for Bennett.

I merely pointed out that it took a disciplinarian coach to turn his career around, and whatever you think of Wade I'm pretty sure we can agree that is not his style.

I also think Bennett would be better off with a coach like that pushing him, but that's just IMO.

Maybe if Anthony Spencer had a disciplinarian coach, he could turn his career around also.

Oh.

And that coach could be John Garrett. It doesn't always have to be the head coach. You can rely a lot on the position coaches to handle those duties. There is more than one way to do it. I think Tom Landry let his assistants handle those matters more so than Jimmy Johnson did and both were successful.

Oh.

Well then I'm expecting Bobby Carpenter to be in the Pro Bowl any year now.

Roy Williams. Martellus Bennett.

"Well at least they can block."

If someone stated before the year they would have expected or been satisfied with this, they would have suffered a message board beat down.

Not from me they wouldn't have. He's basically a rookie on a team that already has a perennial probowler at the same position. Try some realistic expectations sometime.
