Marten better pan out. As much as I love what Jerry and the boys did today, I am very reserved on Marten. How could you not be? After Jacob Rogers and Stephen Peterman scorched us (as fans we already had those two in the Pro Bowl,) I am very leary of OL being drafted before the 4th round, except a Joe Thomas type of player. Look at McQ-- 7th rounder and skys the limit for him. I'm sure Marten has done something right, but what is it?

here is a little thing I try to not get my feeling/spirit hurt by late round draft choices.......don't induct them into the hall of fame before they play three full years.

Try it sometime it really helps with the mental anguish!! not to mention the bowel movements.

At least this time its a guy the scouts wanted(I assume)not Parcells' pet cats like Rogers and Peterman.

and if not what sort of sacrafice are you going to make at the useless threat alter?

romo better pan out.
TO better not be the TO of old.
glenn - will his late career be healthier than most of it pre-cowboys?
may one day we find a kicker to put the non-event back in ep's and short fg's.
may we finally trade coakley for SOMETHING even if he's in julius jones form.

i'm not reserved at all on marten. you use a few past failures as a justification to never try again and that's about as self-defeating as a nerd on prom night.

in time you'll screw up every position in every round - but ya know what? sometimes you'll get it right too.

i've been screaming OL ever since parcells wouldn't play a qb in the 3 games vinnie had to play. no, no direct corrolation, but my feelings for needing a solid line really hit their peak when parcells brought in bledsoe; a player who's faults he should well know and did nothing to compensate for them.

other than tell petitti "i will die before you fail" and win the worst over-drama "please never make a movie line" thing i've ever seen a coach done to yet cut him later for a red-headed stepchild klingon wannabe who looks like he'd get into dueling banjos.

you point to mcq and say "wow, he can be <fill in the blank i quit reading these around here now a days>

so if we draft a wr - i can say look at austin and hurd.
safety - look at watkins - shouldn't we give him a chance?
cb - watch the waiver wire here - we need to address this one.
center - you ever stand naked before an audience, know you're naked and yet you make no move to cover yourself up? so far this is the game we're playing at center and not moving for kalil or the u of hawaii center is still leaving us with ONE center.

we're close to being a very good line and i think C was a priority before OT but hey - we didn't go that route but we're wroking, trying, to fix the line.

finally. this last off-season and this draft we've paid moer attention to the line than when it HAD to be good under bledsoe.

go figure.

we've got several players tomorrow who better pan out. today we didn't get any "sexy" names and that just pushes the casual fan too close to name recognition as a means to success.

sure things simply don't exist. so we all fall back to simply doing the best we can and if a non-sexy pick somehow winds up anchoring the line - fantastic. if he fails like others before him our journey back to the superbowl gets delayed like so many others as well who also didn't have their picks pan out.

we went into today with 10 picks, dropped 4 spots and spend a 3rd rounder and we'll have a top 10 #1 pick next year. i hope those doing the draft evals realize that adds a:

joe thomas
calvin johnson
laron landy

to our draft next year.

so we didn't draft sexy but we drafted smart and next year - we can do sexy where we'll need it most.

wr if we get too old and austin and hurd don't step it uip. we'll get next years calvin johnson.
qb if romo doesn't close the deal.
rb if jjones gets traded out - maybe get a rb and wr in the 1st round ...

i'm pretty durned happy after day 1.

now let's hope some of day 2 pans out and we churn the bottom and improve as a whole.

so far day 2 looks interesting. i hope they pan out. : )

Sorry, but you can blame those picks on Parcells...the idea that you shouldn't take an OL before the later rounds is ridiculous. Adams, Gurode, Davis, and Colombo are 4/5's of our starting line, and they were all drafted in rounds 1-2.
Larry Allen was at the beginning of round 2.

Martin is coming from BC, a program that produces very successful NFL OL's.

Same for any player drafted. They all better pan out. Problem is that never works. Only thing is when Jerrah trades down into lower rounds, the chances of a player not busting becomes greater. I would rather have a few guys drafted in higher rounds make the roster than a bunch of players drafted in garbage rounds making the team. You can't put 53 guys on the field at once, only 11; pick the best player availible in the higher rounds if he can help us jerry!

I agree. I think that's why the Lions made the right choice. If Johnson is the player everybody thinks he'll be, then they'll a great set of receivers. The fact that Mike Williams and Charles Rogers didn't work out, meant that the Lions still had a weakness opposite Roy Williams (I really don't see Furrey repeating what he did last year.) Drafting Johnson addressed that weakness.

I don't think past failures should address your present picks. The combination of need and BPA is all that matters.

Or what??? Seriously if one of these ol's pans we are set, it's a crap shoot mang...;)
