You may not think much of Wolverine, but he is most definitely one of Marvel's most popular characters and has been for quite some time. Objectively no one can deny that.

If you ask across the masses. Most will disagree. A lot STILL won't know who he is.

Furthermore, when they first made those movies... Many didn't even know he/they existed.

I disagree. His character has been in multiple animated series on television and video games. They keep putting the character out there in different formats because he is popular and recognizable. They made some good money with the two movies even if nobody thought the movies were good. He isn't up there with Superman, Batman and Spiderman because those three are at a different level and also have existed for a longer time. If Disney/Marvel had the rights to Wolverine they would have him joining the Avengers franchise in no time. He is more popular and well known than all of the Avengers characters except for Captain America. Anytime I have googled top 10 lists for popular comic book characters Wolverine is always in that list.

Wolverine has been insanely popular for decades in the comics universe. So much so that Dave Sim pulled him into Cerebus as Wolveroach :)

Fox understood this when they made "Days of Future Past". First Class did solid business as a reboot, but they knew placing Wolverine back in the franchise was good for longterm success.

Exactly

Hulk and iron man say nope.

And Hulk and Iron Man would be wrong. Robert Downey, Jr. is the reason Iron Man is very popular right now. That is good in the moment, but over the last few decades Wolverine has been more popular than Iron Man.

The two Wolverine movies had a budget of $270 million and made $788 million. The two Hulk movies had a budget of $287 million and made $508 million. That difference is due to popularity.

Just because you don't like the character doesn't mean he isn't popular and well known.

For comic books, yes Wolverine is above Hulk and Iron Man. http://comicbooks.about.com/od/characters/tp/topsuperhero.htm

Well, my grandmother might not know who Wolverine is I suppose.... but just about anyone born since 1970 not living in a cave does.

Not talking money.
Talking about popularity across all... The masses included. Not just us geeks.
Non fans would know hulk and iron man before funny looking wolverine.

I don't dislike him. People know hulk and iron man more than wolverine.

Cute.
Go way off into the dinosaur age group to try and make your point. The regular casual person will know hulk before wolverine. Bring up 1970?... Perfect.... They all saw or know of the hulk.

Yep.

Not overall though...The masses and geeks combined

Like I said, unless you poll every human being on earth for what is popular. And popularity is each person's own opinion.

No, the masses decide what is popular.

The individual decides for themselves what they like.

If enough people like the same thing, it becomes popular.

You or I may like something, but that doesn't mean it's popular. It becomes popular when large groups feel the same way that we do.

I really hope the rumors are true and Benedict Cumberbatch plays Doctor Strange. Perfect man for the role.

Whole-heartedly agreed.

He's my #1 choice and I feel the perfect actor for the role.

I so hope that the rumors of him being in final negotiations are true.

Channing Tatum’s ‘X-Men’ Character ‘Gambit’ Spinoff Moving Forward

EXCLUSIVE: In a move that makes official that the X-Men character Gambit is getting his own spinoff movie with Channing Tatum as the card-savvy protagonist, Fox has set Robocop scribe Josh Zetumer to write the screenplay. The studio has officially attached Tatum as star, and to produce with his Free Association partner Reid Carolin, The Donners Company’s Lauren Shuler Donner, and Genre Films’ Simon Kinberg.

The screenplay will be based on a treatment penned by legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who with Jim Lee created the character for Marvel in 1990. The storyline is being kept under wraps. The character, which also goes by the name Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, causing the object in question to explosively release its charge on impact. The character materialized in a short burst in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

While the plot was tweaked for the movie, Wolverine played an integral part of the original published story decades ago. I do not agree fully in how the studio used Logan for Days of Future Past but omitting him would have been really dumb on Fox's part regardless of future expectations concerning the X-Men franchise.
