Maryland to leave ACC for Big 10

All I know is, growing up a huge fan of Terps hoops and getting to see the likes of John Lucas, Tom McMillan and Len Elmore compete against the best the ACC had to offer holds special memories for me. I'm bummed.
Awesome teams and great memories.
Len Bias was one the best I've ever seen.

In basketball, they are leaving an awesome basketball (and almost every other sport) conference that is only getting better....but that also has an outstanding academci rep.
But the Big 10 is pretty loaded too.
Most importantly, they are getting more money to patch up that athletic program while not selling thier academic soul.
You should be happy.

I understand how you feel. I grew up on Terps BB. I actually lived in NC for 20 years and enjoyed watching the Terps play UNC and Duke twice a year. I guess that ACC is gone.

Yes, what could have been. I'll never forget Lenny "christening" the newly built Dean Dome with 35 points and handing the Heels their first loss at that venue.

The more I read, the more the move makes sense, however.

just another step on the path to four 16 team conferences imho.

kudos to tbe b1g and maryland for keeping this quiet so long.

divvying up the big east should come next and then the SEC taking two more from the ACC.

the big 12 will scoop up louisville and cincy then await ACC leftovers is my guess.

The big 12 will add plenty of other schools before Louisville and Cincy.

I hear ya.

I dont go back that far, but go back to the Albert King, Buck Williams, Ernie Graham and Greg Manning days.

How bout Len Bias?

How bout Randy White?

There are a lot of really great players in both Basketball and Football that went to Maryland.

You bet. Also, Neil O'Donnell, MVP of Super Bowl XXX!

I didn't want to dislike this many teams.

I already had my homer Terps glasses on for the ACC...now add on the Big 10 ?

Grumble. I wont forget those rivalries.

Seems an inevitable move by Georgia Tech and Florida State to either the SEC or Big 12 is at hand.

07:42 AM ET 11.20 | Under Armour founder and Maryland alumnus Kevin Plank may take his support of athletic program to new heights. [Last week,] Under Armour announced in a SEC filing that Plank would be selling 1.3 million shares of the company "for asset diversification, tax and estate planning and charitable giving purposes." What would 1.3 million shares of Under Armour net Plank on the open market? Try a cool $56 million after taxes -- just the amount Maryland needs to pay if it leaves the ACC for greener pastures. Is it a smoking gun? No. And Plank did not immediately return requests for comment. But such generosity wouldn???t be unique. A $50 million donation would put Plank into a growing class of billionaires funneling tens of millions of dollars into college athletics.

I agree. I think this move forces the Big 12 to move if they want their pick of membership. If they wait, they could see some of these teams take action and join other leagues. Good observation Aiks.

Lefty was a long time ago bro.

Yeah, he was but he was still the best Coach Maryland has had in 50 years.

Even better then Williams IMO. Good guy.

Yea, Lefty was always very cordial when you would see him out and about.

He was the scapegoat for the Len Bias tragedy.

Talked about UCONN to ACC earlier, now hearing that Georgetown and St Jors might be moving to ACC as well.

He was, but I place no fault on Driesell for that. If the account of Bias can be believed, it was a one time thing. There was no pattern to it and Bias was already out of the Maryland Program, headed to Boston.

You are right, he was blamed but unfairly I think. He was a good guy and a damn fine coach for Maryland.

ACC just needs to become a Basketball Conference only. BTW, UConn just lost to the UNM Lobos last night. Pretty big win for the program around here.

Bleeding continues at Big East.
Not that Boise St was going to stay there anyway, but it sounds like they entered into talks with the MWC. Once TCU backed out of their agreement, you knew BSU wouldn't be going there.
