— Dallas Cowboys safety Matt Johnson’s doctor’s visit a week ago with a back specialist in Dallas didn’t uncover any definitive answers to Johnson’s prolonged hamstring injuries.

Last week, the Cowboys had Johnson leave early from training camp in Oxnard, Calif., to fly back to Dallas for an appointment with a back specialist. They were attempting to see if a back issue was causing Johnson’s hamstring woes.

“Just trying to turn over all the rocks. You know?” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said last week.
Johnson has battled hamstring injuries since the club drafted him in the fourth round in 2012. Johnson has never played in a regular-season game for the Cowboys. He spent last season on injured reserve.

I can see this much effort being put into a high pick like a Calvin Pryor or Ha-Ha had they been drafted by us and had issues like these. But I don't see what they see in Matt Johnson who was sort of a off-the-board small school draftee. I mean we've only seen him in a combined 2 quarters of pre-season football, no?

He was on IR as a rookie. Then in the 2013 Training Camp which was a little over a year after he was drafted, they put him on IR again. Once they put him on IR it's basically a free look in next years (2014) training camp.

Basically, all of the decisions related to him came within 1-1/2 years of him being drafted. If they weren't going to give him a chance in 2014, then there would have been no reason to put him on IR in 2013. It's not as if they got to training camp in 2014 and said to themselves, should we pay Matt Johnson a year's salary to come to training camp. They had already made that decision in 2013.

So what you are saying is . . . he's the second coming of Miles Austin.
