Mel Kiper: (1:38 PM ET ) This trade spotlights that they've given up on David Carr. The Carr era comes to an end. But they never gave him a chance. They never tried to really stress and place importance on putting talent around him. This is the end of the Carr era, but it wasn't really all his fault. The organization has to take some blame for that. Let's hope they help Matt Schaub out a lot more than they helped out Carr.
What a load of crap. They gave him 5 years. How much longer should they have kept this bust as their starting QB?

Texans near deal for QB Matt Schaub

SCHAUB FILE
Drafted by Atlanta in 2004, Matt Schaub started two games for the Falcons in a backup role for Michael Vick.

• Height: 6'5"
• Weight: 237
• Drafted: 3rd round (90th overall)
• College: Virginia

CAREER STATS
Year G Comp/Att Yds TD INT
2006 16 18/27 208 1 2
2005 16 33/64 495 4 0
2004 6 33/70 330 1 4
Total: 38 84/161 1033 6 6

The Texans are in the process of acquiring Atlanta backup quarterback Matt Schaub, two NFL executives confirmed today.

After failing to sign free agents Jeff Garcia and Patrick Ramsey, the Texans turned their attention to Schaub, a restricted free agent who was so prized by the Falcons they tendered him the maximum contract that would require first- and third-round picks for any team that signed him to an offer sheet.

There was no way the Texans would trade No. 1 and 3 draft choices for Schaub, so general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak elected to try to acquire him through a trade. It's not clear what the Texans will have to give up to get Schaub.

Before completing the trade, the Texans have to sign Schaub to a new contract.

Schaub would join the crowd at quarterback that includes David Carr, Sage Rosenfels and Bradlee Van Pelt.

The Texans' interest in Schaub, who played at Virginia and started only two games in his three seasons of backing up Michael Vick, is another indication that Carr will be traded after months of speculation.

The Texans wouldn't try to trade for Schaub to have him on the team with Carr and Rosenfels. Coach Gary Kubiak kept only two quarterbacks, Carr and Rosenfels, on the active roster last season.

Schaub, 6-5, 237, has completed 84 of 161 (52.2 percent) for 1,033 yards and six touchdowns. He also has thrown six interceptions. His passer rating is 69.2.

New Falcons coach Bobby Petrino has made a solid commitment to Vick that he'll be the starter and get more responsibility on game days. The Falcons resisted offers for Schaub when Jim Mora was the head coach.

Everyone seems to forget that the Texans still have Domanick Davis also, who was hurt all last year. Ahman Green and Davis together could be deadly.
Davis changed his last name to Williams. That said, he just had another surgery so he's prolly gonna get cut.

So it will prolly be Green and Dayne in the backfield.

Davis is questionable to even play again from what I remember.

Davis may not ever come back from that injury.

Actually i think this is a great move on the Falcons part, the best move the HC could make IMO.

I know someone of you hate vick and yada yada, but the biggest issue in Atl, has been Shaub or vick, pocket passer or runner? Now the HC just elminated that whole problem, giving Vick his full support, If Vick cant do anythng this year, with a Good WR in horn, and a goood HC, then its time for him to be replaced. I think this is the make or break year for Vick. He's showed some flashes, but has put anything together, is now or never for him.

As far as the Texans go, this is just further illustration of utter and complelte failure they had in the draft last year, they passed up Bush, and Vince young, only to turn around sign the very next year, Green and Shaub. i could very well understand bush, but they had every reason to take Vince, and they didnt and this is now coming back to bite them in there butts. IF that draft should go down as the worst mistake in Texans history (besdies even starting a team), and one of the worst mistakes in draft history.

Deadly in terms of what their health insurance rates would be for the team? :D

Like others have said...I think Davis/Williams career might be over before it really got started. Too bad.

And we all know Green is pretty close to hanging it up as well.

AP will definitely be in their sites when draft time comes.

hmmmmm,, how about the Texans fixing that so called LINE ,, that would help any QB they have more than Peterson

the ol will be fine this yr.

they will be getting charles spencer back. and david carr was the top rated passer in the league early on when spencer was blocking his blind side. they picked up jordan black to play the right side. he wont have to play the speed anymore which will only help him.

and i forgot they signed ahman green. they got a nice looking team. if i were them i'd trade down pick up some more picks and draft one of the top cb's.

Unfotunately, he is done. I would be shocked if he ever played another down in the league, just had another surgery. As a Texans fan, I guess this is a good move, but I don't know what to think, I know Atlanta fans wanted him to play at times, but he's pretty unproven. I guess they figured they weren't going to get Quinn, or didn't like him that much, and the 2nd line guys, Stanton, Beck, and Kevin Kolb (who they've been raving about, because he played at U of H) weren't going to cut it. I guess they weren't confident about Sage being the starter. I just wish we could've gotten something for Carr. I'm in the minority of Texans fans, but I think Carr can play, but needs a change of scenery, he never really had a chance to succeed and he was so gun-shy after the awful protection it was hard to watch. I think he needs a confidence boost somewhere else. With this move, I'm assuming we're just going to have to cut him. My only hope is Quinn is gone before Minnesota in the draft and they come calling for Carr.

Theres talk that Spencer's injury is pretty serious and he might not be the same...maybe even miss next year.

He broke his leg last year but I think it hasn't healed correctly or something like that.

That Texans fan above could probably shed some more light on the subject. :)

What are the odds that Schaub becomes the next Rob Johnson?

Pretty high, I'd have to think.

Per espn

ATLANTA -- In a move that figures to have significant ramifications for the incumbent starters from both teams, the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday agreed in principle to trade three-year veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans.

When the trade is completed, Atlanta and Houston will flip-flop first-round picks in April's draft, and Atlanta will receive Houston's second-round picks in 2007 and 2008. The deal likely will be completed later Wednesday afternoon. Houston has the No. 8 pick in the first round of the draft, while Atlanta is slotted 10th.

Sources told ESPN.com that the trade is contingent upon the Texans reaching agreement with Schaub on a contract, and negotiations have already begun.

In acquiring Schaub, the Texans have ostensibly conceded that five-year veteran David Carr, the top overall player chosen in the 2002 draft and a quarterback in whom Houston has invested considerable time and money, is no longer their quarterback of the future. At the same time, the departure of Schaub indicates that new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino is sold on Michael Vick, who is said to have made a strong impression on the rookie sideline boss in their first few months working together.

Schaub, 25, has been the subject of trade rumors for each of the past two springs. ESPN.com reported last Friday in its "Tip Sheet" column that Falcons officials seemed prepared to begin listening to trade offers for him and had begun discussing possible replacements.

One of the strong candidates to replace Schaub as the backup to Vick, ESPN.com has learned, is Anthony Wright, who played with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006.

Despite starting only two games in three seasons and winning neither of them, Schaub is highly regarded around the NFL. The former Virginia standout, a third-round pick by Atlanta in 2004, has completed 84 of 161 passes for 1,033 yards, with six touchdown passes and six interceptions.

Schaub was a restricted free agent this spring and the Falcons made him the highest qualifying offer possible, at $2.3 million. That qualifying offer meant that, had another team signed Schaub to an offer sheet, and Atlanta not matched it, the Falcons would have received first- and third-round draft choices as compensation.

I'm pretty much a David Carr homer, I admit it. I just think that the kid never got a fair chance to succeed in Houston. To me, this is a perfect example of how you don't bring a young QB along. I like the kid and I'd really like to see him go some place where he could enjoy a bit of his career. I think he could play if he had a decent team around him. To me, Miami should really look at this and see if there is an opportunity here. JMO.

Spencer broke his leg in the 3rd or 4th game I believe, Ron Dayne ran into him, I'm not joking either, They really liked Spencer and believe they had gotten a steal getting him in the 3rd rd. I heard the other day some people on the radio said they had talked to him and he's looking good. He damaged the cartilage around his knee when the leg was broken. They signed Jordan Black from KC and resigned Ephraim Salaam as an insurance policy. But Spencer was playing very well for a rookie, hope he is back.
