Several things are baffling about this deal beyond the actual trade itself
1) We seemingly only talked to the Lakers. That in itself is mind-boggling
2) Jason Kidd knew nothing about this trade until the last hour
3) Multiple GMs have already come out saying they would have given way more....with one saying he would've given literally everything

Everyone is suddenly an NBA expert. LOL

Darth is spot on. Just a dumb GM move if anything, not collusion. Money, power and corruption? LOL. Well… maybe money and fame because most players probably want to play in the LA Market on a legendary team like the Lakers, while the Hollywood famous cheer them on. What Jerry still thinks he has with the Cowboys.

Kareem demanded the Bucks trade him and would only accept NYC or LA. As a devout Muslim and a 7’ black guy in white Wisconsin he felt he did not belong. He wanted diversity and culture. Huge jazz fan and couldn’t even find a radio station in Milwaukee that played his music. The Knicks could have had him, LA got there faster.

Kobe was a 13th draft pick. Same as Kawhi Leonard who the Spurs realized had unlimited potential as the 14th pick and traded to the Pacers to grab him first. Easy to say the Hornets should have known on Kobe after the fact but these were the years when high school players were coming out left and right, and for every Kobe, you had several duds who were drafted much higher. Charlotte also got a solid starting center in Vlade.

Magic became a Laker because back In the day a protected draft pick trade did not exist and NBA free agency required a team to give up a draft pick to the team they signed the player from. The Jazz knew what they were doing and probably didn’t bank on it being the #1 overall draft pick. Give the Lakers credit too because not everyone was sold on a tall PG.

And here’s another thing that ruins your theory. The Lakers once tried to get CP3 on the team in his prime but were shut down by the NBA who owned the other team.

IMO the only "collusion" could be Nico just working with Rob due to their time at Nike. The dude had one of the best trade chips in the league, and limited himself to one team, a conference rival at that.
I get not wanting the player disgruntled, but you can't tell me another GM would of let this leaked and lose out on landing Luka.

Nico could of called Riley and a few other GMs and gauged their interest and I guarantee nothing would of leaked.
While AD is still a great player, he really hamstrung the Mavs by only talking to one team, and not another and going back to Rob and saying I can get X, Y & Z from Miami-for example

As a Celtics fan I don’t agree. The Lakers get to reboot with a 25 year old generational player that they can now build around. As I hate the Lakers it just seems like they always get gifted with something. Either a trade like this or every free agent wanting to play there.
Well, Luka had all of the pieces to win a ring last year but got rolled by the C's. It's going to take quite some time for the Lakers to surround him with similar pieces to what he had in Dallas. Just don't see how two ball dominant guys, Luka and LeBald, can make any noise as they're currently constructed. They are way too small. With that said, they're probably not done dealing but bringing in a guy like Vucevic isn't going to scare anyone.

That Celtics team wasn't losing to anyone - they were a well oiled, well built machine for today's NBA game

Maybe a 100% healthy Luka could have taken them to 7, but still don't feel Mavs had enough defense to withstand the C's 3 onslaught.

They wanted to win now they didn’t care about future compensation so in that regard AD was probably the best player available to them. But I still don’t get it. Just doesn’t make sense….they want to justify trading him by winning now but they are playing a terrible game. Killed the whole morale of the team.

A healthy Luka that late in the season doesn’t seem practical.

Win now mode??

Imagine making a trade so poorly received, you had to give refunds to season ticket holders - even though you are in "win now" mode.

Nico has single handily destroyed a franchise.
If he ends up back at Nike in a couple years or worse, with LA.....my gosh

NGL, I initially felt the same as everyone else...and I still wouldn't have done it

But I think the trade easily makes Dallas a better team this year

Though the Mavs did get the Lakers 2029 draft pick, they are out their 2027 (1-2 protected), 2028, and 2029, first round picks and has a 2030 swap with SA. This means in 3 years when Kyrie is around age 35-36 considering he’s still here) and Davis is age 34-35, this team will be cooked. Those draft picks were traded to build a team around Luka. Now Luka is gone. Think the Washington Wizards with less draft capital. This team will be in a special NBA hell.

The new owner is a moron, apparently. Nico comes to ask permission to make this asinine trade and he laughs and says ok ? Maverick fans should be equally angry at this idiot who's trying to make a run at Jerry Jones long standing title of most hated owner in Texas.

I don’t think they will win anything this year. LeBron won’t be there. This is a 25 year old all NBA player that if motivated to get in shape now will be even better. That, plus the fact everyone wants to play in LA so free agents will come, it won’t take the Lakers long to build around him. Mavs had a good team last year but they were not on the Celtics level especially with the depth. Mavs weren’t even the favorites to come out of the west and they did because of Luca.
