Max Unger

Unger has been better than average, which I guess is saying something compared to what we have been seeing, but he hasn't been equal to his draft grade as of yet.

The good news about the debacle known as the 2009 draft is that this is the second time Jerry and crew were burned for spending high picks trading for a wide receiver.

So the lesson is learned and there is no way they could ever possibly do another WR trade for a first round pick, right? RIGHT??????

The Unger thing continues to annoy me. We liked him and had a ton of picks in what experts on this board tell me projected as a terrible draft. In a terrible draft, why not move up and get the guy you like?

Exactly right.

And instead we traded down, compunding the error, and picked up a bunch of terrible players in a terrible draft.

Every time I read about the Seattle O-line, I feel regret that we didn't grab him in the 2nd round in 2009. In retrospect, he looks like a lot better of a prospect than giving up that first round pick that year for Roy Williams.

.
Once a year I somehow am reminded of that trade.

We gave up a 1st, 3rd, and 6th ( 21, 82, 195).

With the 1st rounder, we could have had:
Michael Oher, Clay Matthews, Hakeem Nicks, Jarius Byrd, Max Unger.

PLUS

With the 3rd:
Mike Wallace

Obviously, we didn't see the SEA move coming. If you think the guy's going to fall to you, you don't trade up. It looks to me like we made a mistake, and it bit us. That's a fairly rare occurrence in Dallas. More often it's us reaching for a player who doesn't pan out or just whiffing on a guy we like.

I believe next year is the year Dallas will be a dominant team.

Put all the offseason resources and picks into making absolutely sure the offensive line is set, first and foremost, and this thing is ready to roll for a long time.

Unger was the only guy we liked in that round. If you think it is a crap draft and you have a bunch of picks, why not spend the 5th rounder it would take to get up 5 spots or so when the guy you like is close?

I'm not even sure he's been better than average.

I've only reviewed a few of his games so I may have been seeing some of his poorer performances but I don't see much there.

He really struggles locating in space in the run game but is a decent pass protector.

I believe Seattle offered to trade with Dallas, but wanted their second and third for the rights to move up and get Unger.

You're probably right.

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Bottom line is the rueing that's taking place is a little over the top given the career Unger has had so far... We're not talking a Top-10 NFL center here.

Truthfully, I was simply rueing to rue. :)

It would be interesting to read the breakdown of Unger's performance vs. Arizona from those rueing. The all-22 tape is up.

Not talking Phil Costa level either.

People can try to devalue Unger all they want, but at bare minimum, he's still playing in the league while the multiple bums we drafted aren't.

Add to that that we could really use a capable center right now.

Compare it to Phil Costa's tape against the Giants and let me know the results you find.

I don't think that's accurate.

As I recall, it was Seattle who traded up (with Buffalo maybe?) to draft Unger while we sat on our hands.

I hate to say this, but you asked... They did not move up because they do not have a real GM who understands all the nuances of the draft. Yes real GMs make mistakes but normally not this type, and before all the we love Jerry as the GM people come out to defend him the truth is his mistakes a litttle as you may say they are, are always collassol mistakes. The kind that set this team back years, and I will go on record now and say I am behind his JG choice 100% and believe if he leaves JG alone we will have a ring in 3 years or less.
Yes I know he has done some good things but they do not offset the bad he has done and that is not the draft mistakes, we all know that is a crapshoot sometimes, it is the trades that no other GM in their right mind would make that are killing us. Oh, and also the special teams, and back up drafts he likes to do every decade.
