Max Unger

I don't think that's accurate.

As I recall, it was Seattle who traded up (with Buffalo maybe?) to draft Unger while we sat on our hands.

They did indeed, but I seem to remember that the SeaHawks offered to entertain a trade from Dallas once they got in the slot if Dallas was willing to pay their price.

Could be wrong on that, but I seem to remember reading that this was the case.

I have never seen any evidence of that.

I am glad that Dallas drafted Roy Williams, he made our defense fearsome in the league, and would have been the final piece in a puzzle that had included better players in his first years.

He was a Dallas Cowboy, and made the defense fun to watch during some lean years. Give him credit! He was one of my favorite players, carrying on in the tradition of Bob Lily, Randy White, Larry Allen, as Superman on the field.

Behold the power of Google! I knew I had read this in a few spots. I will not swear to it being true since I was not in either team's war room, but I knew I had read that Seattle had made an effort to get picks from Dallas.

They were desperately trying to trade up from No. 51 to take Oregon center Max Unger, but the Seahawks (No. 49) wanted the Cowboys' third-round pick (No. 69) and that was too steep a price for owner Jerry Jones.

I believe Seattle offered to trade with Dallas, but wanted their second and third for the rights to move up and get Unger.

According to the draft value charts you'd need a 5th to move up to several spots in front of Seattle -- don't understand why we didn't.

That's a ridiculous offer.

But is shows that Seattle knew that there wasn't anything but junk on the board otherwise.

it shows they also knew dallas like unger quite a bit.

end of the day it is crying over spilled milk.

unger could have helped us but i am not anywhere near certain he's even a long-term starter much less a plus player.

every draft in nfl history can be re-done with better results.

move the heck on folks and enjoy this team as is constructed because #newsflash they are pretty good.

I would guarantee you that if Dallas traded their 2nd and 3rd for Unger and had gotten the production out of him that Seattle has, then there would be several folks here posting negative thoughts about that transaction.

That doesn't make much sense to me.

Why would Seattle trade up to the #49 position and then tunr around and offer the spot to Dallas?

Teams don't make trades for a draft position without a specific player in mind.

If the Cowboys had truly wanted to move up to #49, they would have just made the deal with the team who had that pick originally.

Seattle traded 3rd and 4th rounders to get that pick and get back into the second round to select Unger.

That said, thanks for sharing the info!

Unger was the only guy we liked in that round. If you think it is a crap draft and you have a bunch of picks, why not spend the 5th rounder it would take to get up 5 spots or so when the guy you like is close?

First of all, I'm skeptical that we only liked one player in that round. But, in retrospect, we should have made the move, definitely. But not just for the sake of making a move. You make that trade if you think the guy won't get to you otherwise, or if you're not sure. If we really wanted him, then we got scooped. It sucks, I agree, but sometimes that stuff's going to happen. I prefer missing the odd targeted player now and then to constantly giving up 5th rounders when we don't have reason to believe the move up is necessary.

For the most part, true.

Though instead of burning our two 3rd rounders on Jason Williams and Robert Brewster, we could have taken Ladarius Webb and Mike Wallace....and others.

ugly draft for sure

It's not true they had a first round grade on LeSean McCoy but didn't take him since they drafted Felix the year prior. Phil Loadholdt was the guy they would have taken there but decided trading down for Brewster was better use of the picks.
