Yes, it's only one game...the season isn't over, and there's no reason to panic.
However, it was the Commanders and it was in Texas Stadium...they didn't sneak up on us. We didn't underestimate them as we might Cinncy...the Skins simply kicked our butts physically.
It's easy to blame the playcalling of Genius, but what about the defense that gave up 26 points, which is usually enough to get you beaten in the NFL.
We have always said that our OL is NOT a good bunch of run blockers. That game against GB didn't change that. If a team really wants to take away our run game, they can. If they play 8 in the box, you pass, not because you can't grind out a few yards, but because 8 in the box means you should be doing some serious damage in the secondary. We are a passing team.
I base this opinion not on today's game alone...it was my opinion after being torched by Philly and barely pulling out a win...when we crush someone, I tend to think maybe I'm wrong, but games like this make me think I'm right:
I think our OL is pretty good at pass protection, but only average at best running the ball. I think Tony Romo is a pro bowl QB who is still fairly inexperienced as a starter and has a tendency to have some bad games.
I think our defense is enormously over-rated. Other than Ratliff, the other DL starters are not anything to write home about...Spears and Canty are just guys, and the backups are merely backups. The 3-4 is supposed to allow the two middle backers to run freely, but they seldom get into the backfield.
Our secondary is full of talent, but they are only human, and I've always believed TNew was over-rated...good cover guy, but the reason it sucks so badly when he does get beaten is because he almost never balances the scales by making game changing plays. There are guys who give up more big plays, but many of those guys also make plenty of game-changing picks.
We have some young talent in the backfield, and I think the secondary will be better in Nov. than they are right now.
Three games in, and watching GB again today, I'd still say if you look at all three games as a whole, we're lucky to be 2-1. Maybe we'll be the class of the NFC by Dec, but right now I think we're the USC of the NFL...talented, but still flawed and over-rated. We have time to do something about it, but we'd better stay away from the press clippings for awhile. A big win against Cinncy next week doesn't change our status.
This is a good team, not necessarily a great team, and certainly not the greatest team as many thought. The Cowboys have some work to do...at practice.
