Dan Quinn and his defensive scheme…

Is it possible that DQ’s defensive scheme with its monster pass rush and turnover machine drive was the team’s identity and philosophy for the last three 12 win seasons? Is it possible that defensive philosophy actually masked the team’s deeper warts until we played better teams? It’s very possible. This year, a really, really bad front office has pulled the mask off.

The Cowboys were at or near the top of the NFL in turnovers and sacks for 3 straight years. If the Cowboys got ahead by 10 or more points in games, it was curtains for our opponents - especially the below average teams. Last year the Cowboys were undefeated when they scored first. In all but one of our wins last year, we scored first. In all 6 losses (including the GB playoff loss) the other team scored first. If we got behind by more than 7, our defense was not the same.

Yeah I know our offense scored a bunch the last 3 years. But how much of that was gift wrapped by turnovers? And it’s also painfully obvious that this front office had the worst roster building off-season I’ve ever seen in Cowboys history. This offense has 1.5 weapons. Cedee Lamb and occasionally Jake Ferguson. And an OL that looks like Swiss cheese. Ouch.

With no sack and TO machine to cover the team’s deeper issues, and with JJ and SJ throwing this season away, the Cowboys are way worse than they appeared to be before the season started.

Whatever happens with a new HC in the future, this team badly needs a new identity. And whoever is hired to come in here next year has a very barren roster to build on.

There’s no masking that anymore.

Agree. Quinn made this defense look better than it was. He also had players motivated and excited to play.

Obviously, he's not perfect. But the fall off to where we are at today is severe.
For sure. And the better teams like SF, Buffalo and GB exposed this defense. All three of those teams jumped on us early and the defense was toothless.

No, this offense was legitimately good the last three years.

Also, losing guys like Armstrong and Fowler and Hankins and not even trying to replace them made a difference.
No question the offense was good and we lost some good pass rushers. But I’m starting to think Quinn’s scheme actually masked some much deeper roster issues.

The Dallas FO's ineptitude has been the main ingredient in determining the sad history of their decline. It simply reveals a painful picture of what this franchise has ultimately come to. At some point in the future, one might think they'd manage to snap out of their inept management. Sadly, such an unlikely happening simply doesn't appear to be in the books. It's beyond sad to consider that a capable GM might actually provide success, if only Jerry & Son opened their eyes and minds to the real picture.

The problem is, he didn't really help us with all that good stuff. Yes they coughed up some great stats making for some good (spectacular) TV. But in the end they never won against a true contender.

So just like Dak, they were all just pretenders. Quinn did make it look cool though.

Yup. Thing is, his crapp does not work in the playoffs. Only works against the dredges of the league.

Quinn's defense and Moore's offense kept this good the past 3 years, Moore in 2 of them.

Quinn defense was able to control the game for the first 2 years while the offense struggled then the run defense collapsed last year and the offense carried the team

in 2023 if the offense got a lead they were able to take teams out of their run game but it didnt the defense got gashed

Moore is a much better playcaller than McCarthy and McCarthy made him the scapegoat after the playoffs
The offense was off to a bad start in 2023 until the bye week when they were able to change it up

Another thing I notice about this team is every 4 or 5 years they just fall apart and the QB gets hurt but the QB is usually having a bad year before he gets hurt
2010 Romo gets hurt
2015 Romo gets hurt
2020 Dak gets hurt
2024 Dak gets hurt

2024 will be remembered as the year the front office not only did not try to build the team but made it worse so you have to wonder if they really care about this team anymore
result is a complete disaster so you have to wonder if they didnt tank on purpose

After McCarthy publicly stated that he "wanted to play Trey....", I'm really not sure who would want the job anymore in light of fully understanding who is truly pulling the strings behind the scenes even at the level of who the coach can play or not play. Besides Belichick, who would probably take the job just to get closer to the coaching record only, I can't see a young up and coming coach wanting to go to Dallas and possibly ruin their career since they wouldn't be able to make normal coaching decisions.

QB always gets hurt on a team where he has to play hero ball to win.
