NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has dropped Bridgeawter way down his draft board, and Mayock said today that when he talks to NFL personnel evaluators, they all agree that it’s hard to understand how a quarterback who looked so good on tape could look so bad at his Pro Day.

“The Bridgewater thing has confused me, it has confused teams, but I’d be surprised at this point if he goes in the first round,” Mayock said.

Mayock acknowledged that some people are now questioning him about why he has changed his own opinion on Bridgewater.

“They’re good questions, and I’m struggling myself internally with the Bridgewater thing,” Mayock said. “I’ve always believed that the tape tells everything, so I’m struggling with this because I liked him on tape . . . then I saw him throw live and I didn’t like him at all.”

What do these same people have to say about Joe Montana's pro day?

That's a fair point but I think you have to take into consideration that when Joe Montana was drafted, 1979, not a lot of teams were running the WCO. Montana really only fit that offense well. He was not a great fit for more traditional offenses because he didn't really have that great of an arm. He was very accurate though. Also, he was never a starter at ND. I think that primarily, that's why Montana really slipped more so then the combine.

Having said all of this, your point is still a good one.

Teddy probably cost himself millions because he decided to not wear a glove during his pro day. Wonder if he'd still be a lock for the top 10 of just wore the glove and threw as expected?

So if a player has horrible tape and a great pro-day, ignore the pro-day and go by the tape, BUT if a player has can't miss tape and a horrible pro-day go by his pro-day...?

I think this is a bunch of horse manure. The kid is an outstanding prospect and someone is going to get an Aaron Rogers size steal.

I agree. Like I said, they are now nit picking with all the extra time. Bridgewater is no worse than the other projected 1st round QB's.

To Mayock's credit, he really is more of a hands on evaluator who prefers actual game performance to Underwear Olympics. But as far as QBs go, he's always been very adamant that you really should see the throw live.
He did play in the NFL a little while and does (usually) prefer substance over style.

At least he's being honest about his confusion over Bridgewater.

But if there was ever a position in college where stats can be deceiving, it is QB.

Look at the vast majority of stats leaders in college over the years and a huge majority of them fail miserably at the pro level.

I do think this may be an overreaction on Bridgewater though.

Someone please tell why they think Teddy Bridgewater will be better than Geno Smith.

Not provoking, just asking....because right now I tend to think of them in the same tier.

Because his red flags are nothing like Geno's. Tons of doubt surrounding Geno's instincts and pocket presence. No such doubts exist for Teddy. In fact, those are considered strengths

Never a starter at ND? He was the starter from game 5 through the Bowl Game of 1977 and all the way through 1978.

Gil Brandt said they would have taken Joe in the 3rd rd but they had Danny White and at that point they thought Roger had at least a couple more years.

Jumungus was picked high because of his pro day. Best evidence I can see that pro days are all but worthless. By the way Mayock was very high on Jumungus and numerous other QB busts so why anyone would think he knows squat is a mystery

Why can't a team have bridgewater throw privately during the team visit?

That is what I would do if I was considering him high

True.

Plus, way back then, the talent evaluations were far less thorough.
Anyway, anomalies like Montana and Brady stand out in large part due to things very hard to measure from afar.

Kurt Warner agrees with you.
That had to improve your odds

Not sure I follow.

Warner was on the NFL network yesterday with his top 5 QBs.
He really likes Bridgewater for reasons you mentioned and said when you watch game film, he is by far the most poised and NFL ready.
He did go to the pro day and said it was shockingly bad, but still puts TB #2 overall...just barely behind another of his favs (for different reasons) Manziel.
