To Mayock's credit, he really is more of a hands on evaluator who prefers actual game performance to Underwear Olympics. But as far as QBs go, he's always been very adamant that you really should see the throw live.
He did play in the NFL a little while and does (usually) prefer substance over style.
At least he's being honest about his confusion over Bridgewater.
But if there was ever a position in college where stats can be deceiving, it is QB.
Look at the vast majority of stats leaders in college over the years and a huge majority of them fail miserably at the pro level.
I do think this may be an overreaction on Bridgewater though.
Looking at tape has nothing to do with looking at stats. Watching tape gives you and idea of how well a QB plays under duress, how well he moves in pads, how well he throws in pads, how well he reads a defense, how well he anticipates blitzes, will he stand in the pocket and get hit, is he tough, is he competitive. Bridgewater is every one of these things.
Geno had horrible poise in the pocket, had attitude issues, couldn't get along with coaches or players, had poor accuracy on the move and couldn't read a defense (on tape). His coaches at WVU wanted him to run more and get outside the pocket more to overcome his inability to read the defense and he refused to do it.
