Nate said he’ll have 5 good plays then 2 bad ones. Needs to be more consistent. He may need more time but if he’s improving, thats a good thing. See what happens in preseason.
+1 waaay too early

There is an easy way for people to tell if Mazi is worth a flip. We have heard some of the specific technique he is being drilled on. For example if we see him keeping both feet down to anchor on double teams then he is progressing. He keeps playing on one leg. . . .

I expect he is going to look extremely raw and trying new techniques. If he is not then I will start to write him off. Guy doesn't take coaching at that point.

Big Dog -

He’s as slow as molasses off the ball and gets pushed around like he’s on skates.

That ain’t changing.

We'll see him in action in just over a week. That will be the true test. All this conflicting training camp reporting doesn't matter.

That really sucks. We finally draft a DT and he turns out to be a waste of a pick.

Hopefully he can turn it around. Last year was awful.

Yup. Reports don't hold much weight right now.

Once the pads come on and he's playing against another teams #1/#2/#3 then you can see how much he improved, if at all.

You are supposed to make your biggest improvement between year and two. So far it isn't happening. They discuss first 7 minutes. Rodgers the 7th rounder may contribute which is the good news. Lance struggles continue at 7 minute mark.

Hankins was a brief help when he wasn't injured but, honestly, freaking get somebody already. It's absolutely killing this team and has been for years and years and they're on the verge of flushing another season. vurt the furk
Convert Ball to a DT, make a trade, do something!

I am not optimistic about Mazi. I have hope, but not a lot of confidence. As big and strong as he is supposedly, it seems like he plays a lot smaller and weaker. I caught some of the Cowboys practice the other day on NFL Network. I watched Mazi specifically, and he still gets off late, and consequently he gets shoved around. It's weird but he looks so much smaller than the offensive linemen for some reason.

I think his problems begin with his slow get off. By the time he gets his hands up offensive linemen are already in a good leverage position to push him off his spot. I am not a huge fan of Cavanaugh but he is absolutely right about DT being a problem for Dallas. Of course we've all be saying this for years. They needed to address this position in free agency. The middle of the defense is going to be soft again, especially in short yardage situations. We could see a lot of long scoring drives against this defense to wear them down.

I’m watching the videos I do not agree with the assessments of a couple of players. I’m no scout, I don’t have a podcast, so my opinion is worthless.
Those guys are wrong all the time. Rock out with your opinion brother.

Like Coach Pop of the Spurs getting Jeremy Sochan to shoot free throws with 1 hand to get his overall shot progression more in line with doing it correctly.

He took to coaching and his FT % went up because of it.

After just 15 months? Damn that's harsh.
No it isn't. Mazi and Schoomaker are terrible players. Those are your top 2 picks. 2023 draft is about as bad as 2017 and the special teams draft. You know a ton about your top picks right away.

Will McClay has so many fooled thinking he is some draft and roster guru. He pretty much hits on nobody outside of the 1st round and even the 1st round is hit or miss for him. 2nd round is god awful for him.

Mazi was so mismanaged it was ridiculous. Schoon was hurt and shouldn't have even been on the field. He deserves credit for fighting through and playing as much as he did.

Hate to break it to the ”too early to judge crowd” but established. NFL players can tell if a guy is going to make it within a few minutes of practice. The Kelce brothers spoke about it on their podcast both stated you can tell by the way a guy moves whether he’s someone that can last. Id bet good money you get a coach to talk honestly and they’ll say the weight loss was a reaction to seeing how poorly Mazi got off the ball.
Great post.

Wow that is a horrible opinion, that I'd keep to myself. Trevon Diggs, Daron Bland, OSA, Jake Ferguson, Tyler Biadasz were all non 1st round hits just since 2020. From those drafts you also have Richards, Golston, Clark, Tolbert, Overshown, Schoon, Scott, and probably a few I'm forgetting about who are still on the roster and capable of contributing. Since 2020 he's also landed a top 5 Edge player, top 5 WR, and and all pro G in round 1, but tell me more about how hit and miss he is.

Totally agree.
Thunderpimp and I disagreed on his delayed get off as well. I said he shows/showed no improvement. Thunderpimp thought otherwise.

If he can't quicken his get off he's a lost cause for all the reasons you mentioned.

And again like you said, if you watch him, he plays weak in real time. He gets shoved around. Despite all the stories of his supposed strength.

I'm not seeing it.

We were told that this guy is strong well I've got news for ya if you can't play with leverage your weight room strength will be useless!

you need weight and strength and technique
it is like a three legged stool
with all three legs it is solid
take one away and over you go

They have drafted DTs in the first, second, third (several) and later rounds and have signed lower end free agents….and still get beat up the gut against better teams routinely.

At what point will they understand that they are going to need to open the wallet for a DT or two if they don’t want to get bounced in round one?
