"“I don’t even like football, man,” Smith said. “I like hitting people.”

From the horse's mouth
This. He doesnt care about playing football anymore. He did what he needed to in order to get drafted and collect a few million.

Biggest reason why there are "busts" in the NFL. Guys just get burnt out on playing.

Most of us knew he was a bust from Day One, but to be fair, he fits right in on this team and with this culture. "I don't even like football, now watch me hit people"....TRUCKED
All talk and no walk. Typical Cowboy defender. Not too much bite on defense. Lots of bark.

I find it hard to believe that Mazi, a leader of the defense at Michigan and a 1st team Big Ten All Star selection is having a down season. I read once that some players struggle with unfamiliar environments and surrounds once they leave college. Mazi is a Michigan born product who played local high school football and then at Michigan.
Could Mazi be just plain old "homesick"?
Trade him to Detroit for a can of Pringles.

You can always tell when the Cowboys make a reach pick because the thin-skinned Jones will immediately tell you how (insert good team at the time's name here) was just about to trade up and get their player.

"Bill Belichcik was about to draft Jaylon Smith" in 2016. He wasn't.

"The Chiefs wanted to trade up and take Mazi Smith" in 2023. They weren't.

Frauds need to make up stories in an attempt to validate their fraudulent actions.

"People are telling me..."

Jerry: Will, what would you do? (Mazi or Bergeron)

McClay: I would go Mazi. It's been awhile since we had a NT rated this high.

More likely that he just plain old sucks. You ever think of that?

Yep.

Bergeron went 12 picks later so he would have been a reach there too.

Kick in the head or a kick in the groin?

Broaddus has hinted a few times that the scouts wanted Sam LaPorta but the Casual GM was stuck on the two reaches.

If someone truly is a bust it's rather difficult to trade them.
I wish GM Jethro could comprehend that instead of trading for Trance.

A lot of GM 's will trade a 4th or later pick for a higher pick that has not panned out.

Some 1st round picks just can't play in the NFL.

It happens every year.
Ditto here.

It just hasn't pan out.
And there's not a NFL team that hasn't had a bust 1st rd pick. It's happened to all NFL teams.

at draft time, i could understand and buy into what the Cowboys were thinking as Mazi was touted by some
as the best run stuffing DT in the NFL.
And his measurement and workout numbers were freakish.

Unfortunately while Mazi looked like Tarzan,.. but he plays like Jane.

- What still gets me more was the 2nd rd pick of TE Schoonmaker - when we had Ferguson showing impressive flashes his rookie year.
Yet this team still felt so compelled to get another, new TE in here to replace Fergy. - the rumors at Bill's TE Kinkaid rumors,
the coveting rave reports for Detroit's Laporta. ...and there has been nuthin superficial about Schoon.

Another case of drafting for need instead of value.

They pretty much whiffed on their 1st and 2nd picks that season. When you go back and look at the players they could have taken it just makes a guy want to cry.

The scouting department is beginning to lose some credibility, it seems as though they alternate from great to terrible each year in the draft.
