Everyone who liked the Mazi Smith draft selection just equated; fat NT=need=good choice.

He wasn‘t impressive in college, just fit the prototype (size) everyone was yearning for Dallas to add to the defensive line. There is a reason Dallas brought in three big uglies prior to the opening of the season.

It’s hard to imagine a worse pick.

Dallas should just perpetually trade 1st rounders to effectively roll first round picks over until jerry is out of the picture. Let Steven start with 10 picks in the first round.

Let’s focus on what he is doing right instead of wrong that way we got nothing to talk about

Another case of drafting for need instead of value.

They pretty much whiffed on their 1st and 2nd picks that season. When you go back and look at the players they could have taken it just makes a guy want to cry.

The scouting department is beginning to lose some credibility, it seems as though they alternate from great to terrible each year in the draft.
Maybe. There are other possibilities as well:
1. Quinn wanted Mazi and since he was the DC he might have had his way.
2. Jerry overruled the coaches and the scouts to satisfy the fans who have been clamoring for the "big, fat guy in the middle" to shore up the run defense.
3. Mazi just convinced the Cowboys to take him based on interviews, etc., in other words he did a great sales job to get on the team.
4. Mazi is only in it for the money, once he got the $6.6 million signing bonus he has quit really trying, playing more to not get hurt than affect the other teams' offenses.

The above have (at least to me anyway) varying degrees of possibility, and not saying any are true, just noting placing all the blame on the scouting dept may not be accurate...

I find it hard to believe that Mazi, a leader of the defense at Michigan and a 1st team Big Ten All Star selection is having a down season. I read once that some players struggle with unfamiliar environments and surrounds once they leave college. Mazi is a Michigan born product who played local high school football and then at Michigan.
Could Mazi be just plain old "homesick"?
Um, maybe just "tired."

Mazi is a zero. Even Taco wasn't this big of a bust.
Agreed.

Admittedly I'm perplexed though

Taco's problem was his motor.

Even in college I always thought he was never really all in

Mazi to me seemed like he had legit potential and drive. not saying 1st round potential but I thought he could be a solid NFL contributor

But clearly at this point the experiment is a dud. It's not clicking for him and probably never will

While admittedly, I don't follow football anywhere near as much as I used too. I looked at Mazi when we drafted him and I wasn't sure what all the hype was.

Being dominate in college saying nothing about how good you will be in the NFL level. You're comparing a player's results against players who won't be playing football after graduation. Truly special people stand out on a completely different level. Mazi did not stand out in that way to me.
