We’re certainly not getting anything from the pick now and we might not get much from it later. If he doesn’t show some signs of coming around at least by the end of the season, the Cowboys may have to invest another premium pick on a DT next April.
correct some fans dont get it..

71600

3 games for Hankins, hes our starter, hes a true NT, Mazi a true NT... played the same teams in the same situations in the same defense being asked to do the same things....but as a 3 game rookie DT..ughh

That question doesn't really warrant a reply, but since you asked, pretty much it's a well-known feeling. But if you want some examples:

Bleacherreport: "While later-round picks are generally given time to sit and develop for a few years, most first-round picks aren’t given that luxury and are expected to produce immediately."

The Athletic: "Every NFL team wants to select a difference-maker with a first-round pick in the NFL Draft..."

If you disagree, that's fine, we all have our opinions, no need to be so snarky about it, lol....

"1 tech" position is the only position where "almost made a tackle" counts as making a play.
They gotta come up with all these obscure, kabbalistic stats like most blocks taken on when it's raining outside and the moon is 3/4 full to defend what the eyeball test gets right every time: the dude ain't making plays.

I would agree with you, but I'm not an expert.
However, if all they needed was a large strong body to take up space in the middle, I'd think they could have found one later I the draft.

Really? Cowboys ran 25st in the league in rushing yards allowed. In 2022 they were 22nd.

Don't see the improvement....
well, 220 yards came in this last game. its probably an outlier. the first two games weren't that bad, with most of giants run in the 4th quarter.
also, in this past game about 90% of rushing yards were to the outside, were our lane containment was bad and everyone lacked discipline.

If you thought that question was snarky lol.

So you've provided 2 pieces of opinion articles which gives an opinion not a hard fast rule, is that what I'm to understand?

I can find articles that will give statistical expectations to start by position and others that show 1st round picks, especially towards bottom half don't always nor are expected to start.

Here is a current example. Jordan Love.

He was drafted in the 1st round and there was no expectation he start, play meaningful stats or to " produce immediately" or be a "difference maker" his rookie season.

See what you ignorantly and arrogantly took as snarkiness was me asking a question to start building a conversation.

Since you used Bleacher Report here is a quote from an article titled Which Position Presents the Biggest Leap for NFL Draft Prospects?

Across most positions, we see a familiar, sensible pattern emerge: slow rookie season, big step up in the second season, mild increase in the third. Averages for tight ends, defensive linemen, cornerbacks, wide receivers, offensive linemen and linebackers roughly follow this pattern

See the point is, often people reply with opinions not based in any sort of reality, and attempting to start conversations that may be just maybe help all of have a better experience.

How's that for snarky?

Some of these comments are hilarious, you spend a first round pick on a guy you expect production and you expect it soon. Maybe 10 years ago you developed guys, but now with the level of college ball and the way the NFL is, true first round picks contribute from the get go.
If that's what you expect, then don't draft a DT. Because only a scant few show up right away.

The way the NFL is today is a hinderance to development compared to years ago. Years ago they didn't have rules on limiting or limited practice. I'm not just making that up, I heard Carl Banks talking about that. It does make sense.

All you do is pull stats from pro football focus and think that is knowledge.
He is a rookie who has played 3 games. He also plays nose tackle. Both reasons that stats aren’t the proper way to evaluate his play thus far.
Honestly his tackle stats at this point are meaningless.
We will have to wait and see what he ultimately becomes.
Patience is not an abundant quality on CZ.
Also, some keep reminding us that Mazi should be doing better because he was a 1st round draft pick, but I would remind them that Mazi didn't choose the 1st round, the Cowboys did. We can't blame Mazi for what round he was drafted in.
Also, if our opponents regularly throw double teams at Mazi which they have done, it would appear they have more respect for his ability than some of our fans do. Time will tell I guess.

It's still the beginning of the season. Let's not jump the gun here since there are more games left to play than in the season. You never know Mazi could break out late in a game out of nowhere like other HOFs.

Agree w/ that completely. If Mazi doesn't disrupt the LOS, then he is a failed pick. It's not about stats, but it is about disruption. And that is why a NT takes up double teams, because he is disruptive. If he takes up 2 blockers, it is because he will collapse the pocket if you don't double him.

At present, Mazi is not doing this. However, the whole reason he was there at the end of the 1st round is because he is raw and needs technique work. This generally takes times, often as long as a full season.

So, it's not about stats, it's all about pocket disruption.

Our "starter" is making essentially the vet minimum, was a free agent the Cowboys didn't sign until late March. Our starter was on the street, no one else wanted him, at least not enough to pay him more than the minimum, he's one of the worst rated players on PFF, and yet Mazi can't get snaps over that guy.....

Some fans don't get it.

First of all whoever named this thread using the word stats for a nose tackle already failed before it even started fact is he's three games into his rookie season failed before it started this entire post is ridiculously failed..

2nd of all maybe you don't get what I'm trying to say most nose tackles have this kind of stat sheet this is what they do when they go back and watch film mazi's actually doing his job pretty well so why don't you take your hater Debbie downer constantly negative feedback somewhere else we're tired of hearing it the man's played three games. You say he can't get snaps and I'm saying the coaches have decided to bring him along slower so let's get off it I'm tired of people running their mouths on here as if they think they know something the man is three games in to a rookie career

and yes I said it go away these negative comments these overreactions three games in to what a absolute straight up they never knows tackle that position typically you don't really see what they are doing unless you break down film play by play snap by snap in each game and realize who's assignments were what and then figure out whether they were playing well...

Most nose tackles do not fill up stat sheets everyone mistakes them for three texts or guys who are playing inside who are actually pass rushers and run stoppers but nose tackles really are supposed to just eat up space and stand up their men and leave it opening for the rest of the people behind them you know to make it clean path to the running back or quarterback now show me all the plays he didn't do that everyone of them then tell me what is assignments were and how he's not playing well show me not just your eyes what you think you know because most fans don't know squat..

Jordan Davis had 1 tackle in his first 3 games last year and he had 20+ more plays than Mazi.
These dudes do not know how to judge a nose tackle they keep acting like these guys are inside three texts like OSA types or Aaron Donald types and they fill up some stat sheet whoever named this and use the word stats for this particular player in this particular thread missed struck out three times just naming it that we know where his head's at he doesn't understand what a true nose tackle it's supposed to do...

Mazi isn’t here for stats. He is here to take on double teams and do the dirty work. The other players are supposed to fill the gaps and make the tackles. They are busy trying to get to the qb.

Boom. There is the truth. He is here to free up other players and clog the middle. He has a non glorious job. Donald is that special player that’s able to do the extra not required of a NT. Any solo tackle Mazi gets is a bonus for us. He is not the reason we got gashed with the run. Our D-Line is trying to get upfield and go for the qb instead of holding the lane or assignment. Unless Quinn is calling a certain play that has them doing this.
