1st round busts also cause problems with the roster.

Other players are forced out and we spend 2-4 years trying to develop a player that isn’t worth a 1st round pick.

He’s slow and has zero pass rush skills.

So playing him at 3T isn’t worth it.

He’s not at Hankins level. Might not ever be.

Mazi has one solo tackle in 3 games. Not exactly what I expected as a 1st round pick. I do think he has shown great potential though.
2 things. Your dumbo GM did not trade up for Jalen Carter, just like he did not trade up for Warren Sapp. Finally, generally rookies at DT in the NFL do not show advancement until mid season as they get use to the size, strength, and line play required in the NFL.

Mazi's job at Michigan was to stop the run. Except for the stupid DC calls and DL formations last week, Mazi has done just that and has done it at the level expected.

The NFL.

Are there any players drafted higher than a 1st?

They are paid millions for a reason.

Mazi making more than Hankins.
So, NFL offices have written into NFL rules, that all first round picks must be starters?

Is there a penalty levied upon teams that fail to start 1st round picks?

Where can I read this rule and expected penalty assessment?

1st round picks are supposed to be starters.

When they don’t start, they tend to be scrubs/busts.

I.e. Taco and Carpenter.
It's not the end of the world that Mazi has had limited snaps so far. 1st round defensive players selected after Mazi in the 1st include Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, Nolan Smith, and Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Of that group only Bryan Bresee has received a full game worth of snaps and that wasnt until this past week. The TE Kincaid only has 72 yards so far so he would be called a bust if Dallas had taken him. An OL might have been a solid choice, but at full strength, there is no guarantee a 1st round pick would be starting in Dallas. Outside of QB and maybe TE I think Defensive lineman can be one of the toughest transitions to make to the NFL. If this were a top 10 pick I would agree completely with you, but the gap between 10 top and last 10 selected in the 1st round comes with a huge gap in talent most years.

I'm still trying to figure out who has set the standard that 1st round picks should always be starters.

One person told me the NFL does, but has yet to tell me where I can read the rule and penalties assessed for failure to start a 1st round rookie.

You make valid points by the way.

Yep, Really Dude. He is a run stopping DT that is playing in a Defense that is not the penatrating defense of the Miami 4-3 or the Flex that allowed the DT to free up the MLB. Go look at the defenses Dan Quinn has coached and name me the multi tackling and also sack machine DT. Quinn has one pass rushing DT and one space eater. Because of the game Dan Quinn called vs AZ and those crazy gap open alignments last week, the run DT (which is Mazi) is not going to post up big tackle and sack numbers. See Osa for sacks. See Osa get gashed vs the run last week.

He’s getting like 10 snaps a game now.

They don’t trust him.

That pick should have been OL or RB.

We could have found a scrub 1T in the later rounds.
I wouldn't suggest any player is a scrub in 3 weeks, that's insane and unrealistic, at best. Your opinion is yours. I just think you're off. We FINALLY addressed the middle and all some fans want to do is whine that they're not Russel Maryland after a couple of games. Not to mention they signed Hankins to be a part of the rotation.

if he is forcing the offense to double team, then he is doing his job.

the run defense up the middle has been much improved.

He's getting paid $13 million over 4 years. He got $7 million of that this year, $750k in salary and the rest bonus. His CAP number this year is $2.4 million. He was a late round pick, which basically makes him a second round talent. The Cowboys had to pick someone. We better hope he makes it because he is the first DT picked in the 1st round by Dallas since 1991. If he busts then it may be 2054 before they draft another one.

I believe the 13mill is all GTD.

They could cut him after 2024 and take a 7mill dead cap hit.

Btw, I’m guilty too. I bought into the hype on this player when he was drafted.

A lot of anointing oil was poured out.

Imagine how good Mazi would be if he had any speed and a killer first step.

Can’t compare a physical physical freak like Mazi to a defensive end like Taco who ran a 4.9 40. I still love the Mazi pick. And hated the Tacslow pick from day 1. I remember talking to my buddy who played in the NFL for 10 years. And said we drafted Taco and told him what he ran. He laughed and asked if he was going to play defensive tackle
That's cool. It's a discussion board. We can discuss it and agree to disagree or just see how it all turns out at the end. I'm hoping you are right. I just don't see no fire in the guy. You can have all the strenght or talent in the league. You don't want to be the best-it's nothing no coach can do for you. Peace...
