McCarthy: Door is open for Zeke return

I don't think any sane person disagrees that Zeke could not longer produce at the level his salary would dictate. I only quibble with the reasons for that... ranging from injuries to himself, o-line shuffling, and last but not least, a total and complete about face in offensive philosophy. The simple answer might be "he just got old and beat down" but frankly it's just not that simple. 5.5 ypc and second in the NFL in rushing prior to the 2021 knee injury confirm for me that it wasn't just "Zeke getting old" that led to his production dropoff. He has never returned to that level of play since that injury and that's a shame. But that's football.. and there's nothing to be done about it.. The Cowboys needed to get cheaper at the position. We all understand that. What many of us don't understand is the hate that gets spewed in Zeke's direction because of it. Dude has been a model citizen off the field for at least 4 years and has been a total warrior on the field. What more could we ask of him?
Frued or Jung would have a new nobel prize about it.
I say just because you are an alleged cowboys fan...doesnt automatcally make you a good person. I know there was a recent admin post about personal attacks. But i neither totally agree with nor violated that request/rule.

It is the truth, so Zekes departure should be the new norm, yet we still have the Zeke poster boy fans that get to attached to players.
I would probably be considered an entire A whatever if I was a GM.
No player loyalty unless you have earned it, players like Tyron get retained for a reason.
He’s 3rd all time RB for Dallas.

He’s earned respect.

Bottom line here is the NFL is a business and emotional ties to players get severed all the time. Zeke poured his heart and soul into the game and sacrificed his body for seven years for the Dallas Cowboys. As a result his effectiveness no longer matched his salary, so the team had to move on.

It sounds cold to a lot of people and I understand that, but it happens in the NFL all the time to every team and we shouldn't act surprised. Especially at RB, a position with a historically short shelf life. Long careers like Emmitt's, Frank Gore's, and LaDainian Tomlinson are the exception, not the norm.
Agree.

Every player either retires or gets cut.

Most play only a few games. i.e. preseason

I understand the player loyalty thing, just saying, especially at the RB position, we need to start learning how to get over, paying 2nd contracts.
1st contract benefits the owner.

2nd contract is for the player.

Most players never see a 2nd contract.

Zeke and Dak are working out together.

Maybe they know something we don’t….

The first contract benefits the player too as it is more money than most people will ever see in their lifetimes. All for playing their favorite game.

Here's hoping we'll detect, hire and sign a capable young power RB to replace Zeke -- Charbonnet, anyone?!

The results say it all. Zeke's effectiveness as a runner capable of breaking a big one is gone. He's still a short yardage specialist but those guys can be had in later rounds.

Honest, guys, I hate saying that because I had hoped for so much more but he has not been an offensive threat since the day he signed that contract. I can't recall a more vivid career crash in Cowboys history. If his annual rushing stats were in the form of a chart, it would look like a Wall Street disaster.

I don't really see that happening. Reminds of when people wanted to bring Dez back. His time is done and you have to let go.

I mentioned strongly when he was cut that my gut was telling me he wont find another team and he'd retire. I'm sticking with that. The guy is washed. His legs are dead. The other 31 teams agree.

You know very well he was dealing with injuries the last two years. If he can get some rest and get healthy...he will play again.

I'm sticking with that.

It was far too late for respect when he held out with two years remaining on his contract.
Not to nitpick, and no one likes a holdout, but when holdouts were a thing, that's when players would hold out. After their 3rd year. Khalil Mack and Aaron Donald were about to do the exact same thing after their 3rd year. There was nothing out of the ordinary with what Zeke did.
