McCarthy Says Dez Didn’t Catch It?

Exactly, on that last point. This wasn't the first jump ball of this kind he and Romo attempted. This below was taken from a preseason game that same year. In that example, Dez isn't even touched. Going to the ground the whole way.

That guy could sure go up for a jump ball...

I really never saw that ball hit the ground, EVER, in that GB game, so what would be the difference from the above analogy? Seriously?

Yeah, the ball hit the ground. Steratore himself said when they did replay they saw the ball hit the ground, which was grounds for the reversal. If Dez doesn't let that ball touch, he could have bobbled that ball 80 times so long as he snagged it in the end. He tried to do too much.

I find it ironic how many people brag about how much better of a coach McCarthy is, even with his two HOF QB’s, and still argue that we would have won a game if Dez caught it. That would mean Garrett out coached our new coach, I didn’t think that was possible according to most here. Interesting.

He's not "obviously" doing anything. To the naked eye at real speed, it looks as though he's falling. Like I said, in the replay you can see that he attempted to lunge but his foot slips as he attempts it and nothing changed his trajectory of falling to the ground (which is probably why a lunge would get you out of the GTTG rule -- if you can execute). I just posted an example of an almost identical good catch Dez made that year and he falls the whole way.

Funny you post two videos-the one where he does not need to dive to get to the end zone and the other where he needs to dive to get in. In the first he keeps 2 hands on the ball and falls down -the second he switches to one hand and reaches it for the end zone-a football move!

Below is the language about a "football move" in the rule book from 2014. Lot's of people infer diving or reaching with the ball but it's certainly not in any way clear that even those would qualify as a football move.

And I'll give you reaching, but as other have stated, Dez was falling more than diving.

c) maintains control of the ball long enough, after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, to enable him to perform any act
common to the game (i.e., maintaining control long enough to pitch it, pass it, advance with it, or avoid or ward off an
opponent, etc.).

The normal act of catching the ball is to tuck it away when falling. Den had so much control of the ball that he skipped that and reached out with the ballroom try to get to the goal line. That is not an act common to the catch-it is an act outside of the catch process-I have never seen anyone intentionally reach out with the ball as part of the catch!

I see and the packers were the ones that created those weather conditions. Actually the packers were the first team to have heating coils under the turf and besides the frigid temps, the field itself was in pretty good condition until about half way through the 4th quarter when the coils stopped working. Then the field started to get frozen and wasn't a factor until the last drive. This is how long time announcer Ray Scott and other people explained it. I was young and don't remember all the exact details but have heard the stories over and over again from people in the area.

What's funny about it? I posted 2 videos of the exact same style of catch to show that Dez was going to the ground no matter what. In the other video the DB doesn't even touch him and he falls by himself. And you don't "switch hands" by having 2 hands on a ball and then choosing to remove one. Not that it matters anyway by the going to the ground rule then. Maybe Dez should have kept both hands on the ball in both cases seeing as it was 4th Down and there'd be no do-over. As I said before, he tried to do too much?

I have 2 other videos for you to comment on. Does Dez' attempted lunge look anything like what people consider a proper lunge as illustrated by Jacoby Brisett here? Dez hardly even moves the ball forward from where he is but you think that was a demonstrative reach/lunge with his face plant there?

That’s all good and dandy but you’re basically making it all up. I don’t see anything in the rule that positively supports your stance.

Why do we keep reliving this??? Even if Dez had caught it and the refs stayed with the call. We still would of lost. Rodgers had plenty of time to move his team down the field and our defense-especially with Rodgers at quarterback- would have folded like a chair again. That's why for me the catch or known catch didn't change the eventual outcome of the game. It just would of paused the agony for us Dallas fans. And made the loss even worse as we watched Rodgers once again win it in the final seconds.

That’s not what he said. McCarthy said he asked for an interpretation of the rule. He knew it wasn’t technically a catch by rule, but he wasn’t going to challenge unless he knew the ref knew the rule. All he said was the ref’s answer to his question is why he challenged it.

This was the only part of the event that impressed me. A thinking man, and shows why he’s been so successful on challenges.

Moving the ball from one side to another to prepare for a reach is something a person potentially could do while in the air - that could be done in the midst of a leap or a dive. Accordingly, that cannot be the necessary football move.

Again, Dean said it one way, the NFL said it another, the refs and review officials had their opinion … we are all just picking sides. I side with the idea that a "football move" was at that time something like a player having his feet under him solid enough that he could make a cut or make a move to avoid a tackle, not just moving the ball around as he was going to the ground.

Again. And I can’t stress this enough. The time to do the move is what was required. Not the move. Either way he did both while both feet were on the ground.

He caught it while in the air.(obviously) He brought it to his shoulder while the first two feet were on the ground. Then switched to one hand as his third step was planting and preparing for a lunge. The time aspect was met.

Blandino was head of the NFL officiating and was in charge of explaining. He contradicted his earlier explanations that went with the rule perfectly.

As he explained very clearly. Had Calvin gotten both feet down prior to the reach his would’ve been a catch. Dez did everything Calvin did and got two feet down. Then a third which he lunged off of.
