McCartney takes halftime show, makes it better

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nobody, but nobody was worried when Paul McCartney stripped off his jacket midway through his halftime performance at the Super Bowl.

All he revealed was a long-sleeved red shirt. Nothing malfunctioned. And if he wore any nipple jewelry, he mercifully kept it to himself.

NFL officials wanted a safe halftime show after last year's Janet Jackson fiasco, and McCartney delivered. It was sweet nostalgia for the people stunned by Jackson's MTV-produced spectacle, if a bit off-putting for the kids: Each of his four songs was more than 30 years old.

Surely you recall last year's climax to a body-shaking, crotch-grabbing festival: Justin Timberlake yanking part of Jackson's top off to reveal her bare breast to some 90 million viewers.

McCartney's stage set -- a giant cross of video boards on the stadium floor with the singer at the center -- was visually arresting, although it made his opening song, Drive My Car, look like one of the broadcast's dozens of auto commercials.

McCartney's theatrical James Bond theme Live and Let Die was a perfect backdrop for a stadium fireworks show. The lights, placards and video images also made Hey Jude a sight to see, although it was odd to see the red, white and blue placards co-opt one of the original British musical invaders for an all-American event.

There wasn't any danger of a lip-synch controversy, either: you could tell it was the lived-in voice of a 62-year-old singing.

It was strange seeing the former Beatle, a bold and shocking performer for another generation, now presented as the sedate option. NFL censors were probably hoping the "California grass" reference in Get Back slipped by unnoticed, or figured people would think he was simply referring to a football field.

Another irony: the overwhelmingly safe and patriotic musical presentations before and during the game appearing on the usually envelope-pushing Fox network, while last season's shocker came on fogey-friendly CBS.

The closest thing to a wardrobe malfunction during all the performances came courtesy of country singer Gretchen Wilson's guitar player. His jeans had a strategically placed rip in the crotch.

Before the game, Alicia Keys oozed both class and chops as she took a creepy concept -- a duet with the late singer Ray Charles on one of his signatures, America the Beautiful -- and made it work wonderfully. A picture of Charles singing appeared on the stadium scoreboard screens.

The pregame show was a mixture of old and new schools, with country, rap and soul. Wilson brought out white-bearded fiddle player Charlie Daniels, and the Black Eyed Peas had Earth, Wind & Fire along to sing Shining Star.

Although with the NFL watching so closely, it's a wonder how Wilson's Here For the Party managed to slip through.

"Gonna have a little fun," she sang. "Gonna get me some."

One can almost hear the small voices in living rooms across the country: "Daddy, what does 'get me some' mean?"

"Some chips, honey. Now pass the salsa and quiet down."

NFL should be thrilled with both the Pre-game and Halftime show. I know I was. Great job Sir Paul

I was thinking the same thing about the "get me some" song.

I was thinking "Not from me you ain't you nasty looking *****, I don't care how well you clean up".

I was hoping Paul would lift up his shirt and reveal a nipple ring just to mock what happened last year. I thought it was cool that he stopped singing and let the crowd do the Na Na Nas.

I have never been accused of being a prude but there is a place and time for everything and what J. Jackson did last year was not the time nor the place to pull a stunt like that. At her own concert or MTV awards cool but NFL SB not really cool

It was a great Half time performance. I really enjoyed it, but sadly the NFL easily lost the younger generation, a generation that they had been trying so hard to bring into the fold with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Janet Jackson and P.Diddy performing in past SuperBowl half time shows.

I thought the halftime show sucked. Maybe it was good for the older generations who watched, but I would rather see someone a bit more exciting than an aging rocker.

Maybe some Ozzy?

It doesn't bother me one bit because Janet is a has been and I could careless about Timberlake and Puffy.

I enjoyed the halftime show, but then again I am a big Beatles fan.

It was funny I saw where Paul was at a PC and they were asking him about being chosen because he is safe after what happened last year and he was joking some.

He said something about they could be sure there would be no wardrobe malfunctions this year as he planned on performing nakid lol.

I was never a Beatle fan, even though I wasn't even thought of during their heyday. The closest I could come to relating to Paul McCartney was thinking of his duet with Michael Jackson, Ebony and Ivory. Yeah I know. pretty horrific thinking there.

Anyway, I do appreciate older generations music, as I just love music especially since most of what is played today samples what was done in the past. I just thought his voice had seen better days and so musically, I was unimpressed.

I do like the old rockers, I just thought they could've picked someone different with better vocals. Or if not better vocals, then a better show to overcome the vocals. I'm not saying the Janet Jackson, Britney's and Ashlee Simpsons either. Shoot, I would've taken Phil Collins over listening to Sir Paul.

Man it was a tame and laid back halftime! After last years fiasco I do see that they had to have one that was completely safe and PC for the whole family.

Here is to next year's halftime that will have Brittney/Christina lip lockin and wearing skimpy clothing! WHOO HOO!!! LOL

j/k

The guy is 62 and did a great job...and imagine, he actually SANG rather than faking it...

The songs he chose were solid songs...stuff people wanted to hear...meaning, mostly Beatle stuff...he didn't sing "around" the melody...

I've seen him in concert three times, dating back to the mid 80's...class act...every performance was perfection...

Funny thing is, this is the "safe" performer that once performed on the roof of the Apple building stopping traffic in the streets in London...as the police came to arrest him and his fellow Beatles, McCartney singing "Get Back" ad libbed lyrics about how they were about to get arrested...

And after the chaos stopped...John Lennon, walked up to the microphone and said, "I'd like to thank you on behalf of the group and myself...and I hope we passed the audition"

Great stuff indeed.

Funny thing about seeing live performers on TV...is it seems many of the "Pop" stars now days only lip sycn....so it may make one think that some who sing live just don't have a great voice.

Personally I thought his vocals seemed pretty good....then again I am not into the whole idea of some of today's singers holding notes and going up and down the scale and then calling it music.

I agree it was a nice change to see someone actually be able to sing their own songs instead of have a recorder to cover up the fact that you have no talent. LOL

Agreed it is funny thinking about him being a safe choice now after some of the views of the beatles back in the day.

Thier hair cuts were considered wild back in the day, the lyrics and drug feel...the time one of them said they were bigger then a religious figure....the idea that girls would cry and faint when seeing them.

I too thought he put on a very good show and sang great.

The best halftime show in years by far.
No doubt, Yeager!

It's amazing that ONE Beatle was much better than Justin, Janet, Kid Rock, and all those useless dancers combined!
