STEWART STILL HAS A SORE TOE

Posted by Mike Florio on August 15, 2008, 2:01 p.m.

The draft stock of former Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart wasn’t affected by a big toe on his right foot that required surgery. He still landed in round one, at pick No. 13, with the Panthers.

But months after surgery, Stewart’s toe is still sore.

It’s something I will probably have to deal with for the rest of the season,” Stewart said, according to Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette. “I’m pretty sure it’s going to hang around for a little bit.”

The Panthers still believe he’ll be an impact player in 2008. If he isn’t, owner Jerry Richardson’s big toe might need surgery, too, after he breaks it off in the rear end of G.M. Marty Hurney.

He was a huge risk...I thought so then and still think so today...the toe thing was bad...plus the offensive system he (and Mendenhall) came out of has a history of producing skill guys who dont pan out

I'm very happy with Felix Jones and think he's gonna be a huge addition to our offense and special teams

I'm excited about Felix. But it will take three years before we get a good read on him vs Mendenhall.

They are saying the plan is to give Jones 8-10 carries a game, if so and he got just 150 carries, even at 4.0 yds per carry thats 600 yds...I think its a safe bet to guess he'll probably have some longer plays, and his yds per carry will probably be 4.5 or more...if so that gets him to at least 675 yds...700 is not much of a reach if he stays healthy and they do adhere to the workload they said he'd probably get

I can see Felix getting 500 to 600 yards. Still that is not 700 yards.

The breakdown last year:

Marion Barber
204 rushes
44 receptions

Julius Jones
164 rushes
23 receptions

I think those numbers for Barber will go up this year. He won't get over 350 carries or anything like that, but he will get at least 280 to 300.

I do expect Felix to be targeted more as a receiver than Julius was last season, but he may not end up with quite as much rushing attempts. I would love for Felix to burst out and have a lot of yards. I just think Barber is going to produce the vast majority of the yardage.

If I had to guess, I'd say than Felix and Choice will see a good deal of action in the first 3 quarters of games, but in close games late it will eb all Barber. This allows him to be fresh enough to pound people like he has as a backup.

65% Barber
25% Jones
10% Choice

It really doesn't matter, and meaningless comparing the two since Felix is ours and that's that.

Too bad this will die in the NFL Zone, but anyway...

I'm watching the replay Sat morning, and Mendenhall looks okay, but he appears to be a 230-lb finesse back. Not that he's running poorly, but he hasn't done anything that a smaller back couldn't do.

And I think I see what the scouts calling him a p----- were talking about. The guy has awful body language. He scored on a short TD, fell into the endzone (when he wasn't even touched), and then kind of limped off with all these grimaces on his face. He wasn't hurt, he was just tired -- huffing and puffing like a madman. Then he had this pained look on his face as he sat by himself on the bench afterward, like he'd just been through some terrible ordeal. Kind of strange, really.
