SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will be suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, according to broadcast and Internet reports.

The 22-year-old Merriman, last year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, was initially to be suspended last week alongside two other players, ESPN.com reported, citing people with knowledge of the suspension whom the report did not identify.

Guard Mark Lehr of the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers began serving their suspensions this week.

Do they mean Matt, our old guard ? Knock on him was his strenght.

So, Roids gets you 4 games on you 1st offense or is this a 2nd offense for all 3 ?

You insult my intelligence, yet you couldn't pick out sarcasm out of not only an insanely sarcastic quote, but all the emoticons that accompanied it.

I'm not only impressed that you got out of the paper bag, but you made it all the way to Cowboyszone.com.

Roid policy is 1st offense you get 4, 2nd you get 6, and 3rd its a year.

This is totally distinct from the other drug policy -- I believe they are two unrelated programs.

Thanks AB....I thought with the drug policy they get a 1st time break or something...Funny how they treat this differently, even tho both are drugs.

I think the 'roid policy has to be different because it needs to be constantly updated to add new drugs and masking agents. This policy strikes me as more severe -- and I think that's fair since steroids are performance enhancing whereas getting jacked up on cocaine the night before a game isn't going to help you play better.

Here's how I understand the regular drug policy, the first offense leads to enrollment in the diversion aspect of the program but no penalty other than increased testing. another positive test? lose 4 games worth of pay (but you can still play). the next positive is a 4-game vacation, a 4th is a year.

Can the 1000th post in this thread get a prize?

That's what I'm waiting for!

For what it's worth, I think we should have drafted Merriman over Carpenter! :horse: :rake: :abuseme:

This is totally distinct from the other drug policy -- I believe they are two unrelated programs.

It's 4, 8 and 1 year for first, second and third offenses with steriods or banned supplements.

Illegal drugs, cocaine, marijuana, etc.. it's a little more complicated..

Basically you go into stage one on the first offense, no fine/penalty...

After you stay clean for 90-120days you move to stage 2... or you move there immediately if you fail a test. If you move there by failing a test or not cooperating with the program you are also fined 3/17th of your salary.

Stage two last for 24months... if you fail a test you are suspended for 4 games without pay if you did not stay clean through all of phase one

If you did stay clean through phase one then you are not suspended, but fined 4/17th of your salary.

In both cases you stay in Phase 2...

If you fail again, if you had successfully completed stage one you are suspended for 4 games without pay.

If you did not complete stage one successfully, you are suspended 6 games without pay..

At that point you move to stage 3.. You will always be in stage 3 you can not get out of stage 3..

A positive test in stage 3 is banishment from the NFL for 12-months and you must apply for reinstatement after that time.

If a player stays clean in stage 2 for 24 months, or two full seasons, they wipe the slate clean

I have to say this is amazing.

Such an outpouring of glee over a player suspension.

This doesn't change Ware's circumstances whatsoever. He still needs to produce more.

That's why we took him over Merriman to begin with. We thought he was the better player.

Where's the pouring out of glee? There's not many posts in here that state any ectasy over Merriman's suspension. Most people are just glad that there won't be any more Merriman s. Ware threads.

I have not, or will not, read all 67 pages of this thread, but, has CrazyCowboy had anything to comment about this Merriman drug user?

He's only said a thousand times that the Cowboys should have drafted Merriman over Ware...

Or, if Merriman comes back and ends the season with more sacks (keep in mind he'll get to see the Raiders again) then we'll have a real mess on this board.

Superpunk:

You are smarter than this. To quote a despicable talk show psychologist/charlatan, "Get real".

This whole thread is a reaction to defend DeMarcus and denounce Merriman, otherwise there is no reason why it is so huge and keeps on going.

The steroids now provide the Ware supporters with an easy out.

This has been a hot button issue ever since Merriman began to get the excessive publicity and now is the chance to get payback. There are more than a few in this very thread who are dancing on graves without knowing the facts. For all we know, this could be a minor blip like Peppers' suspension was. Yet, he's still a pretty good player last time I checked.

if we knew we'd be looking for a situational pass rusher who would have a year or two to develop behind Burnett and Ellis.......
