Merriman vs Ware....what was our draft dept thinking?

ROFL. What a bunch of bull crap. Where did this clown get his information from? His delusionary mind?

5. Cincinnati's Odell Thurman probably wins the league's defensive rookie of the year award. But I just changed my vote to San Diego's Shawne Merriman. He creates havoc when he rushes the passer, as Manning discovered Sunday. It was Merriman who sacked Manning twice and tackled the star quarterback for a loss on a fourth-and-goal at the San Diego 1. Merriman's two sacks put him at nine for the season, and don't mention it to Cowboys coach Bill Parcells. He wanted to draft Merriman this year, but owner Jerry Jones tilted toward DeMarcus Ware. Anyone who reports on the inner workings of the Cowboy draft room is speculating. Where is Clark Judge getting this info? From BP? From Jerry? From Jeff Ireland?

Come on now. If BP wants someone, he wins the argument.

Well, both San Diego and Dallas are both in danger of not making the playoffs, so perhaps they both drafted picked the wrong guys.

but Merriman is the best player in the world. how could this happen???

I guess that means LT is a terrible runningback.

Yep and Gates is a terrible tight end. :D

Merriman played a great game yesterday. I would say that this early in their careers, he has a slight advantage over Ware in performance. I emphasize slight. He hasn't dominated all season. He has played like a rookie, which should be expected. In a few seasons, we will know for sure which one is better. I thought Dallas would be fine with either and am willing to wait to see if that is true. There are some not willing to wait. Maybe they are better at evaluating talent than myself, but I doubt that. I am pretty darn good. :)

I wanted to add that I think Marty is not a good coach. San Diego is a talented team and if they don't make the playoffs, I blame the head coach. They shouldn't be in the position of hoping to back into the playoffs at this point. They have played a similar schedule to the Cowboys and I think many people would say they are more talented at every position. That has nothing to do with the point of the thread, but then again, I didn't the thread had any real point. :D

As a Skins fan, I was PISSED we took Rogers over Merriman.

Then I remember sitting there and holding my breath, praying you guys didn't draft him.

Being a Terp Alumni, that would of just stung.

I still think Washington made a mistake in passing over Merriman. He's going to be a force.

I jumped for joy when we picked the Jim Thorpe winner. Carlos Rogers is/will be a stud. Period. Jason Campbell was a good pick too. Gotta look towards the future.

So.....I guess Drew Brees is to short and small........:laugh1:

Maybe the scouting department was thinking that Ware had more long term impact potential. Sure Merriman is more ready to play now, he played against much tougher competition in college. I think I'll give Ware a few years before I start ripping the scouting department. Lets see what happens after Ware is in a NFL workout regimen and learns how to play wih better leverage and strength. The last guy taken from Troy took a few years to get up to speed. That would be Osi Umenyiora of the Giants. He is a stud now, but not much of a factor for the first year and a half of his career. This is his third year.

I was in the pro draft Merriman camp. I think the take goes like this Merriman is a bigger LB 265-270I believe with more immediate 3-4 Skillset and ability to play day 1 at a high level.

I had Ware a risky pick at #11 - Small school player, Maybe a year or two away from NFL Ready body. Remember he was a 195 pound high school kid who worked his way to 250.

I think Ware has more LT potential as a pure edge speed rusher over Merriman. I also thing Merriman who just turned 21 could grow intoa monster of a player.

Too early to tell.

Holy Crap!!!! Someone gets it.

Ware played for Troy State. Merriman for a big time Maryland program.

Merriman is more ready now. If Ware outperformed Merriman this year, it would have been a shocker. How can you expect someone to come from such a small program and immediately dominate? He would have to have been far far better than Merriman to do so.

You all need to recognize that we are looking at two guys at completely different stages of their development. Merriman was more ready to go -- but Ware is going to need a little time to get there. The team knew this - and evaluated Ware as the superior talent. Superior talent not as in will do better this year -- but superior talent as in will have a better career.
If we were'nt worried about having the best player of the two THIS year then why are we trying to win with Bledsoe THIS year? Besides that, Parcells is the guy that always says you take the players from the big schools. It will take Ware two years to get to the point Merriman is now, if he does at all.

Who says Drew is just for this year? Just last week Jerry was talking about extending his deal.

I was recently told by someone close to the Cowboys that Jerry and Stephen Jones, as well as Bill Parcells, have no interest in EVER dealing with a player represented by the Postons.

~There's a message there I know some of you will get.~

That is why Ware over Merriman, and I think it's too early to judge him a bust. He's playing a position he's never played before at a higher level than he's ever played before.

This kid will be fine. He's not ready for Canton yet to steal a phrase.

The next sound you hear will probably be a gunshot.

Hostile, I believe Ware will NEVER be a bust. He already leads the team with stops behind the line and has four sacks and countless near misses.

Ware will make all of us Zoners proud in the very near future....maybe next week!

Ware playing a brand new position and scheme.

Merriman has been in scheme and postion for 2-3 years at Maryland.

Mark it down Crazy, this off season or next there will be negative headlines about Merriman that makes us all glad we passed.

Hostile, you may want to book mark this quote, because you very well could be correct. Merriman today has a much better chance at making a negative headline then Ware--I believe everyone on this board would agree with you on that issue!

This is what makes the article from Clark Judge so crazy. He says BP wanted Merriman over Ware -- but BP's strategy for this draft was very clear -- he was getting good players who were high character guys as well. The only pick who wasn't described as a "team leader" was Barber -- but he comes from a solid football background and certainly didn't have any character issues.
