He left because he and his agent though asking to be traded, and sitting out of training camp practices would lead to Jerry caving giving him what they demanded. When they realized they were being traded, they tried to come back to negotiate with “empathy “. Careful what you ask for.

if that is the case, why did he make a last ditch effort to approach the cowboys to work out a deal to stay in Dallas, and he was told to play on the 5th year option or leave?

Jerry was VERY competent in not agreeing to pay a defensive player 47 million per season. Paying the guy 47 million would have been incompetent.
