How much is he going to cost us? I know he still has a couple years left on his rookie deal but I can see him getting 25 mill per. 6 year 150 mill with 100 million guaranteed?
They have as much as 4 more years of control after this year (5th year tender because he was a first rounder, and then they can tag him, if need be). They have plenty of time to get his next deal sorted out. It’s gonna cost them, though. Will they try to classify him as a LB to get a cheaper deal, or will they do the right thing and offer him a deal for a top-flight edge rusher? Lots of wickets to jump through on his next contract…whatever his deal is, it’ll be the highest in the league for a defensive player at that time.

This is why the Cowboys didn't sign any big names to big contracts. This is why they are saving their surplus cap space. They want to carry it over to help sign these Cowboy players.

A big contract to OBJ all but insures he departure of these already valuable players.

I guess as problems go, it's a good one to have but you are right, the cap means hard decisions are often needed.

At the risk of derailing the original posters thread, I wish "home grown" players only counted 80% to the cap or something like that to reward good drafting.
That's what I've been saying for years. Drafted players account differently to the cap. You still can't buy a championship, but you're not hurt for drafting well. Maybe give 1-2 exemptions per team that don't account toward the cap and those only go to drafted players.

I do with there was some cap discount when you resign players you drafted. Sometimes I hear people saying there should be no cap but I don't like that either... even though we have a rich owner. It would just take someone like Elon Musk to buy a team and build an all star team every single year.

Any NFL agent would advise Parsons to hold out after his third season. The Cowboys realize this.
