How much is he going to cost us? I know he still has a couple years left on his rookie deal but I can see him getting 25 mill per. 6 year 150 mill with 100 million guaranteed?

Well, you can say goodbye to DLaw.. No way in hell they'll resign DLaw to a bigger contract. I personally think DLaw is as loyal to the money than to Dallas. That money will be allocated to Parsons. Dallas will have to continue to draft great with new defensive players to compliment him.

You think 25M? I think 30M is basement offer. He's probably closer to 35M. After next year we'll see what he gets. But don't despair. Everyone seems to get antsy around extension time. Any big cap hit coming from Parsons won't happen until 2027. That's a long time from now. This is true no matter when he signs an extension. Why worry about it now?

When the time comes, my guess is Micah is going to command $32 - $35M a year.

That Donald contract reset the market.

He'll be paid the top defensive end when he signs his contract, they may as well do it early and get his younger years guaranteed.

He has 2 years and a 5th year team option left on his rookie contract.

Next year,....he's going to start pushing. He may be the best defensive player in NFL. I guarantee you he THINKS he's the best PLAYER in the NFL.

He, and his agent, aren't going to want to just play out his rookie deal, and risk year after year that he suffers some sort of injury that will change the lotto ticket he'sin line for.. He'll play next season, but will start making major noise. Then next offseason,...it will be New Contract, OR no play.

I wouldn't. Diggs can leave. Not interested.
I would attempt to trade Diggs for two premium draft picks and let DQ coach them up.

You save massive cap room, and if you hit you leverage one good (but possibly over valued player) into multiple picks and multiple players.

I guess as problems go, it's a good one to have but you are right, the cap means hard decisions are often needed.

At the risk of derailing the original posters thread, I wish "home grown" players only counted 80% to the cap or something like that to reward good drafting.

right. it's crazy that the league hasn't instituted some sort of bird rights at this point.

I'm not sure what you mean here. In all likelihood he will sign an extension after next season. But regardless of when he signs it, it doesn't start until 2026. That part isn't debatable.

They have as much as 4 more years of control after this year (5th year tender because he was a first rounder, and then they can tag him, if need be). They have plenty of time to get his next deal sorted out. It’s gonna cost them, though. Will they try to classify him as a LB to get a cheaper deal, or will they do the right thing and offer him a deal for a top-flight edge rusher? Lots of wickets to jump through on his next contract…whatever his deal is, it’ll be the highest in the league for a defensive player at that time.

They're not going to do that. Players that teams know they want to keep, get an extension after their 3rd year. There are multiple reasons for doing that. One reason is that it's cheaper, and the cap hits are smaller because there's still a 4th year left on the rookie deal to allocate bonus money.

Waiting for the contract to run out, or signing a player to a new deal after being tagged is a failure on the team's part. It's never done by design.

I agree that it would be foolish for the team to take the approach I listed...was merely pointing out that, if necessary, they have several more years of control, if it were to come to that.

Any NFL agent would advise Parsons to hold out after his third season. The Cowboys realize this.
If he can negotitate after his 3rd we should do that and sign him to a longer deal for less money per year.

Yes, we should.

However....

That would prevent Jerry from demonstrating what a shrewd negotiator he is.

Parsons on a rookie deal, and Diggs for that matter is a major reason why the window is wide open this season and next.

Next season is 'all in' time if Jerry wants to win one his way.

This year should have been in hindsight, but who really saw this coming with the questions at o-line and receiver.

Going to be hard to fill the gaps when there are elite contracts on both sides of the ball.

Before the new CBA, he absolutely would have held out. But I think that's nearly impossible to do now. The penalties are too steep. The fines can't be waived either.

I don't think he's going to have to worry about any of that. He's a generational talent. Most teams don't mess around with that, unless they're in a rebuild.
