Michael Crabtree situation

IMO, Crabtree and his people are fools. I also feel that the NFL shares in the blame. Crabtree should already be a 49er and practicing getting ready for the season. However, he knows he can simply hold out all year and re-enter the draft.

I personally feel that once a player is drafted, the team should own his rights for 3 years. Now they can trade his rights to another team, or even relinquish them all together. However, once the player's name is called, for the next 3 seasons, he is a part of the team that drafted him.

Add the above stipulation to a rookie salary cap and initial 3 year contract, and I feel situations like Crabtree's will be a thing of the past.

Thank goodness Jerry is able to get our draft picks into camp and ready to fight for a roster spot...As much as I dislike the Niners, I do feel bad for them and their fans.

I dont know who is advising him, but if they think he is going to get the same amount of money when he DOESNT get drafted in the top 10 next year, they are insane. This guy is a complete moron.

If he re-enters the draft he's not going to get close to what the 49'ers are offering, Crabtree is ********

He's worried about money now just wait till he see what happens when he finds himself bargaining as a mid to late round 1 pick.

Sign the contract you spoiled brat and earn your money!

Guys on Sirius radio keep saying he will eventually sign with the 9'ers. Apparently these high draft picks take out loans thru their agents or whatever for cars, houses, etc. And these loans come due so he'll have to sign. I dont know, sounds reasonable.

WR's rarely do well in their rookie year, much less missing an entirer offseason/TC and now the opening week. Even if he signs he'll probably be a non factor this yr. Not to mention how Singletary will react to him.

The nfl can't change the draft rules without the player's union agreeing.

Of coursse they do, once he retained an agent and his college days were officially over he was getting cash.

Most of these big shots get paid all along, don't ya think? Not all players, but the high end guys probably get cash right after entering college as a Freshman and it continues right on through. Boosters are the best;)

If a player can stay out and re-enter the next draft...how did Dallas draft and retain the rights to Staubach, Walker, and Henning?

I'm guessing the rules changed when the NFL granted the player free agency in what, 1993? Not sure but that's my guess.

I don't know about that. Bo Jackson did it back in 1986. He did not sign with the Bucs who drafted him and came back a year later and got drafted by the Raiders. Rules were in place, but I am not sure how they worked. Maybe the player has to decide to re-enter the draft and sign something. It is an interesting question.

Also take into consideration the millions in endorsement money he would have made if he would have just taken a reasonable offer for his draft slot, went to camp Day 1, earned the Niners #1 WR spot and went out and won Offensive Rookie of the Year in a wide open rookie class.

Now he's flushed his entire rookie year down the toilet. Even if he signs in midseason, he'll get little to no development. Once the season starts teams are worried about getting prepared for their upcoming game on Sundays, not babysitting a rookie who is 3 months behind everyone else.

Crabtree and his agent are both morons and I don't feel sorry for them one bit. I hope they do sit it out all year and go into the draft next year. Have fun trying to get that 40 million next year when you're a late first rounder.

This summarizes his situaton quite precisely. He's cost himself money, but he doesn't know it yet or he doesn't care. Either way, he's got a warning flag attached to him, regardless of where he ends up.
