Michael Crabtree situation

That would be the obvious assumption but I'm pretty sure the deadline has passed where they can trade him.

The 49ers can trade the rights to Crabtree, too, but not until March 1 with the start of the NFL's new fiscal year. If the 49ers are unable sign or trade him, Crabtree will go back in the draft and the 49ers will get no compensation.

For now, the 49ers face a league-imposed deadline of Nov. 17 to sign Crabtree or his rookie season is done.

So while they could not trade him now they could trade him prior to the draft

The deadline for trades ends in mid Oct. I don't know of any rule that says the 9ers could not deal his rights to another team.

Maybe, but it's a bad move to do it this year. He would have nothing to offer this year. He hasn't played in over 6 months and not to mention getting the chemistry with Romo. We do have Austin and Hurd leaving in FA next year though. If we DID trade for him it would be for next year. Doubt he plays this year.

I'm not saying Dallas should offer anything even if they could do a trade today. All I'm getting at is I think the 9ers will either sign him or they will look to trade his rights before they end up with nothing. I don't think Crabtree will enter the draft next season.

Honestly, he's still a first-rounder next year... although not top 10, so you could even make an argument for giving them next year's first, which will hopefully be a late first pick.

I wouldn't give a first but I'd give up a 2nd and wouldn't regret it. Hurd will most likely be leaving and Crayton isn't exactly a spring chicken.

I would like to keep Austin though because of his speed.

I don't think they'd sign and trade him because any deal would have to include a signing bonus, which would hurt the 9'ers cap.

But if they signed him to a cheap deal just to trade him to us, then we'd have to obviously re-do the deal.

Could we afford to give him a contract in the range he's wanting and still pay Ware?

I certainly would.

Not worried about a price at this point, because I think it is a moot point on happening this year if ever.

The only truth to the rumor posted is that Crabtree does want to end up here. He may be going about it in a very hairbrained way, but he's young. I would have not hired an agent and gone right back to Tech, but that too is moot.

If the 49ers were to sign him, then trade him, it would be for almost no signing bonus since the second they traded him they would eat the whole bonus on their salary cap. They'd have to sign him to some base salary only deal which Dallas could immediately rip up and sign him to a normal deal.

Sign-and-trade deals are really a NBA thing but I know the Chiefs traded for Matt Cassell and then later signed him to a big deal.
