IMO, Crabtree and his people are fools. I also feel that the NFL shares in the blame. Crabtree should already be a 49er and practicing getting ready for the season. However, he knows he can simply hold out all year and re-enter the draft.

I personally feel that once a player is drafted, the team should own his rights for 3 years. Now they can trade his rights to another team, or even relinquish them all together. However, once the player's name is called, for the next 3 seasons, he is a part of the team that drafted him.

Add the above stipulation to a rookie salary cap and initial 3 year contract, and I feel situations like Crabtree's will be a thing of the past.

Thank goodness Jerry is able to get our draft picks into camp and ready to fight for a roster spot...As much as I dislike the Niners, I do feel bad for them and their fans.
I agree the current system stinks, but to assign a player to a team for 3 full seasons gives the team way too much leverage. That would open the door to way too much abuse.

I think this is an issue that will be addressed - and solved - in the upcoming CBA negotiations. I expect we will be seeing a slotted system in the next CBA. Rookie salaries are out of hand.

With each game the 49ers win, like yesterday's game against the cardinals, Crabtree loses a little more bargaining power.

If I were the GM of the 49ers, I'd tell his gaent that for each week of the season that passes, $1 million in guarenteed money comes off of the offer.

According to Profootballtalk.com, Michael Crabtree is "getting nervous" at the 49ers' stance in contract talks not changing following the team's Week 1 upset of the Cardinals.
"There's now a sense that he might be getting ready to take the offer that the 49ers have left on the table," editor Mike Florio writes. This comes after a late-week ESPN report that all signs pointed to Crabtree holding out and reentering the NFL Draft in 2010. Crabtree's already lost one potential game check.

He was banking on them doing terrible yesterday, getting blown out, and feeling the need to cave to him.

Crabtree and his agent are both morons and I don't feel sorry for them one bit. I hope they do sit it out all year and go into the draft next year. Have fun trying to get that 40 million next year when you're a late first rounder.

It's not his agent. Last I heard his agent was trying to distance himself from him.

If a player can stay out and re-enter the next draft...how did Dallas draft and retain the rights to Staubach, Walker, and Henning?

those were different situations;

staubach like henning was in the service for 4 years, the cowboys drafted both as future players. Generally a team doesnt draft players that are in the service for 4 years.

walker was in the world football league, where the cowboys took a flyer on him with the wfl not staying around.

Yahoo Sports' Michael Silver reports that the 49ers are reducing their standing offer to unsigned first-round pick Michael Crabtree.

Maybe this is why Crabtree is reportedly "getting nervous" about his threat to hold out for the entire season. The reduction isn't significant (only $200,000), but could drop with each week. The Niners' previous offer reportedly would've paid him "up to a dollar less" than No. 9 overall pick B.J. Raji, which would've been plenty fair. Crabtree was picked tenth overall.

Why can’t anyone see that Deion Sanders/Jerry Jones is behind this whole thing!!! There is only one team dumb enough to draft this fool after all he has done this year and that’s the Dallas cowboys.

Crabtree is from Dallas and his whole family is cowboy fans. His off-season workout was with Deion Sanders (Jerry Jones personal Biotch). Deion Sanders has stated that Crabtree doesn’t need money and is in good shape financially. Jerry Jones or Deion Sanders is sliding this fool some money under the table I guarantee it!!! Crabtree played for Texas Tech and he wants to stay in Texas.

This ****** is not holding out for money, he is holding out to play for the cowboys. The 49ers still have QB issues but the cowboys have Tony Homo who throws for 300 yards like its no big deal.

If he sits out the 2009 season 1: He will get the money he wants 2: Stay in Texas 3: Play for the team he grew up watching and 4: Be a receiver in a passing offense.

Why cant anyone see this?

If Crabtree were to go back into the draft and we drafted him in the 2nd I would welcome him with open arms. I know I've bagged on him in the past but it would be excellant value.

Let's hope he doesn't ask for a new deal after one year.

There's no truth to Deion or the Cowboys part of it. But Crabtree very much wants to play for the Cowboys, and that could be playing a part in his hold out. It would not shock me if a deal was brokered before the trade deadline. He does not want to go back into the Draft pool. He would fall below the 10 spot and might face a rookie salary cap. But there is little doubt in my mind he does not want to play in San Fran if he can avoid it.

For the record, there were Dallas scouts at every Tech game for the last 2 years. This is a guy they seriously wanted.

I can see the Madden trade ideas now ......

"Give San Fran a second and either Austin or Hurd for him"

Although I would do that ;)

At this stage I would not be shocked if the 9ers look to make a deal where Crabtree's rights are traded instead of allowing him to enter next years draft and get nothing in return.

That would be the obvious assumption but I'm pretty sure the deadline has passed where they can trade him.

The deadline for trades ends in mid Oct. I don't know of any rule that says the 9ers could not deal his rights to another team.
