The dude was a hell of a player in college. I would love to see that type of play transfer on to the field in the NFL. I'm rooting for anyone who can help this team right now. I honestly feel like he's going to be a contributor on this team.

I honestly share your feelings. Pretty stoked about picking up a solid DE talent on the cheap.

Sam is not a distraction. The media attention will fade and he will become what he already is. That's just another talented defensive end.

Sam is a distraction and if he is so talented then why isn't he on the 53 man roster of the worst defense in the NFL?

I'm so glad we signed him. He will play this year (and you will grudgingly like it).

If he plays this year and produces then I will be fine with him on the team, but i doubt that will happen.

I look forward to revisiting this with you and many others that share your premature line of thought.

Some say "distraction" others say "historical." Sounds like pov.

And Garrett's press conference was his weekly press conference. It wasn't to "announce" Sam's signing to the practice squad. The media made that headline.

The same can be said about you sir
Of course. The only difference is I am about giving chances where chances are due. The same can't be said when thinking along your lines. The dude has done nothing but take his 7th round selection opportunity and perform against whoever they tossed in front of him. While he wasn't on our radar pre-draft, the nose down hard work he has displayed during training camp and the preseason warrant a chance. The guy was signed to our practice squad. Low risk. Potential high reward. I don't see any reason why we wouldn't agree on this but, then again, I am all about chances where they're due.

Playing in the NFL isn't a right, either you're good enough or you're not, plenty of guys come in and do their job the right way and are not given chances, what makes Sam so special? I don't agree with you, and I have valid facts as to why I don't.

It hasn't been determined yet whether Sam is good enough or not. I can tell that a lot of guys with a heck of a lot less going for them HAVE made it and have stuck around. The guy was among the best at his position in college football last year. He isn't the perfect size for the NFL but there have been plenty of players that were too small, too slow, too tall, etc that have made it. He doesn't cause the circus, the media does. Are you going to let the media determine this kid's fate or are you just going to let things happen on their own?

What about the job has Sam done the "wrong way"? By all accounts, works hard in practice, has done nothing but say the right thing...so I am very curious to hear what he has done that makes you feel this way about him.

College accolades doesn't mean anything when evaluating whether you can play at the NFL level. Sure there are some guys who make it through for a few years who aren't very good, but they would never receive the amount of attention/distraction that Michael Sam has gotten. You're right, the media is to blame for that, but if Sam had 1st round talent, the distraction wouldn't matter because his talent would surpass the distraction. Michael Sam has marginal talent with huge attention/distraction, and it's not worth keeping a guy on the practice squad for that reason.

Of course he has a chance. Will Smith has a chance. (I assume he will be on someones practice squad eventually or be in a camp next season) I believe it was Richard Dent of the Bears that had a "bad body" and poor combine times. (Although Dent was still 6-5 265) He just had natural pass rushing ability.

When did I say that Sam has done his job the wrong way? Please show me where I said that.

Uh, this is what you said:

You are implying that Sam has done something wrong and for some reason doesn't deserve a chance to prove whether he is good enough or not.

Read the entire context of why I said that. I was responding to another poster who claimed that Sam deserves a shot because he works hard and just does his job, and that's why I said that there are plenty of guys who come in and do their job the right way, so why don't they get the same treatment as Sam? Don't assume next time.

The NFL is a sport where a specialist can make the team. There are guys that are kick and/or punt returners that won't ever be a regular player but are kept because they do one thing well. There are tons of ST guys that will never start but get jobs in the league and last for years. Lots of teams have pass rushing specialists that won't ever play regularly except for injury. There is nothing new or different with Sam trying to win a job. Oh, except he is openly gay. Outside of that there is no difference...except the media.

Even in the context of a reply you are suggesting Sam hasn't done something right. Michael Sam deserves a shot because he has shown a proficiency at the game at the highest level in college, AND has worked hard trying to do his job. Why SHOULDN'T he get a chance...name one reason that isn't because there is a media circus.

Dude, did you even read the conversation? I don't think you did because you're still trying to make the case that I insinuated that Michael Sam did something wrong, I never claimed that or insinuated that. Either keep up with the conversations or get lost, I'm tired of repeating the same things. READ.

What you did in college doesn't mean anything when evaluating whether your game will translate to the next level. What part of this do you not understand? Jackson Jeffcoat was an All American STUD in college and he can't find work in the NFL, and his father played in the NFL and his connections still can't get him on a roster. Explain that one for me.
