Mick's mail: Hamlin contract talk heats up.

Rick Kite, Fairfax, Va.: What is the latest on the contract negotiations with Ken Hamlin? As I recall July 15 is an important day to reach a contract/extension for players with the franchise tag.

Mickey: You are right, that's the deadline for players with franchise tags to sign long-term contracts. After that, they must play for the franchise tender, which in Hamlin's case is one year, $4.396 million. If you sign a franchise player to a long-term deal after that date, you lose the franchise designation for the length of the contract. I'm told things began budging some this week, and both sides seem to be zeroing in on the deal Gibril Wilson signed with the Raiders, which I thought was a tad much at that time, six years, $39 million, with nearly $20 million paid out over the first three years.

I'd say that's about right for Hamlin. If we can get 6 years at the level of play we got last year, it's definitely worth it. He gives us lots of flexibility at safety.

I really hope this thing gets done.....

6 years 39 million sounds about like what he's worth to me

i'm just curious to see how that affects our cap situation for the next 3 years with 20 million being paid to him during that time, and also how much of this contract would be guaranteed?

I'd like to see him sign for slightly less than that, but won't be expecting him to. Either way, this is very good news.

I cant wait til this is done, hes the first safety since woody to actually solidify that position, it would be sad to take a step back and lose him next year.

I would rather see him play out the year under his franchise tender and then select a safety with the first or second round pick next year.

I just don't see how we can pay everyone without running into problems later.

At least safety is a position that we haven't really addressed in the draft, and Hamlin is still young.

I have a feeling Canty loses out in the game of musical chairs, though, and I hate that.

I HIGHLY doubt that.

We probably will run into problems in a few years, but hey... if a Super Bowl WIN (an appearance and loss does nothing for me) comes out of it, it's completely worth it.

Jerry and Stephen like being up against the deadlines.

I wonder if there's any word on Glenn.

Not that we have much choice, but when the Raiders set the market... UGHHHHH

I totally agree. Hamlin has taken a gaping hole and sealed it.

The way contracts keep going up, this will probably seem like a bargain in a couple of years anyway.

Haven't you heard he's being traded for Simms. :laugh2:

Gosh, I hope Canty gets a chair. He's another great 4th round pick that is only going to get better. Hopefully he won't mind Ratliff money. He's the DE we need to keep. Put Spears out there if need be. Use his future salary to help offset Canty's contract.

Unfortunately, we don't know how the "new" Roy is going to turn out. Let's say the "new" is the same "old", thats 1 hole. Then if we haven't signed Hamlin long term, thats 2 holes. Cause free agency next year with Hamlin could get ugly, big big money for an above average safety.

We need these young safeties to show this year, Watkins, Brown (I think he at safety now).

Jerry almost has to sign Hamlin now, to many unknowns that could create future problems.

I know we have alot of picks next year but those might be needed for offensive holes (WR / trade / draftday move up).

I hope we sign him, but to me thats way too much...he isnt a 6-7 million dollar a yr player, nor will he ever be...I am not saying he isnt better than say Gibril,Wilson (who got that type of deal) because I think we all agree he probably is, but Wilson wasnt worth anywhere near that either.

6-7 mils a yr is alot of money for a guy thats simply an adequate to good player, and thats what Hamlin is...he is not (nor will he ever be) an impact player

David

I'd definitely take Hamlin or Wilson... So I expect Jerry to pay him. He finally brought some stability to the position.

I dont think that would be the case, but if they are sitting at VR today saying "lets keep Hamlin at the expense of Canty" thats pure stupidity...Canty is a better player with alot more upside than Hamlin, and he plays a more important position

What?

Canty is an average 3-4 DE. Hamlin is an above average safety.
