Mike Fisher sums up Murray situation perfectly

As others have said, he won't be cheaper. However, if you are going to pay Murray AP type money, then why not get AP if he is available for the short term? He is the homerun of the two players and has proven that even after injury. Murray is a very good rb, but isn't exactly a game breaker. You can only hope that this year Murray turns the corner and has more similar years to come IF JJ decides to pay him but its hard to gauge that.

If you take a look at the backs who have gotten around 400 carries and then look at their production the following year I think you have a pretty good gauge. I know it's not fair to compare Murray to those other backs but the trend does not support bringing back Murray. If you care to look there was an article posted on the NFL site I believe breaking down other backs who toted the rock for 400 carries or so and their production the following year.

Offer him 5M if he doesn't agree let him walk. We will be fine with Ryan Williams in the backfield.

Listen.... closely.....

Stephen Jones: "I’ve been consistent in saying that we want to keep our good football players on our team. And I’ve been consistent in saying DeMarco Murray is one of those guys that we want to keep around. Not only is he a good football player, but better than that, he’s a top-notch individual. ... He stands for all the things we want to have as a Dallas Cowboy.''

Jason Garrett on DeMarco Murray: "In many ways, he established the identity of our football team. This is a hell of a football player."

Closer....

Garrett doesn't want to get into any business stuff, but he wants to make it "abundantly clear" that Murray is a hell of a football player.

Do you think the 'identity' of our football team matters to Garrett?

Murray is 26.

I hope you're onto something because, quite frankly, the lowball offer coupled with the ferocity of the fan hate parade has me very nervous. Without Demarco stabilizing our offense this year, we most likely would not have made the playoffs. Oh.. also Romo probably wouldn't have finished the season due to one of our other RB failing miserably on a blitz pickup...

We need him back in the saddle. The dime a dozen talk makes my blood boil. We've been searching for what he brought for years. He is young and will continue to improve. Will he gain almost 2000 yards again? Possibly not. However, 1500+ is very achievable and the stabilizing factor seals the deal. Don't break the bank but have the RIGHT conversation and avoid letting this guy hit the open market...

Quite frankly, it doesn't matter if that's important to JG or not. And, if Joseph Randle was running the rock, he'd be part of what establishes the "identity." Murray is a tough runner and good teammate, no doubt, but the more important identity he has established is that he can't hold onto the freaking football.

And he'll be 27 next year.

You weren't listening, were you?

What did Stephen say?

The Patriots have been doing it for 15 years with everybody except Brady.

Not necessarily. Yes, they trade guys and let them walk, but I'm not sure that they throw out these low balls offers that everyone seems to be suggesting, and if thy do, it's likely not near to the same extent. Murray is not going to make $4million per yea next season. He likely won't make $6 million either and has a good shot at making $8 million+ per year. If that is too rich for us, then fine, I just don't see the reason to offer him deals significantly below market value.

I've come around. Give him the 4 year deal. We're trying to win now. Just don't break the bank. Worry about the consequences later. Romo probably has 2 or 3 good years left? Also, i'm not buying just plug another back. Murray is good.

Why do we want the reputation of low balling players? We could just as easily let his agent know that we aren't willing to spend the money required to sign him on the RB position.

Cowboys have a long standing reputation of over spending not of low ball offers

I'm fine with this
I don't think Murray plays more than 10-12 games next year going by the history of RBs with more than 400 and Murray's injury history

We had the shot at the Super Bowl just as much for the commitment to the run and the resources invested on the OL.

Look, Murray had a great year. But is he is special talent with a proven track record like Emmitt Smith? Is he like Barry Sanders capable of making something out of nothing and scoring from anywhere?

He could not take this play:

And score the easy TD to seal a playoff win.

So why would you pay premium?

Maybe he makes this play IF Martin holds his block. Why break up the team is the only point I would like to make.

Oh I agree. I for one don't want Boys to break the bank for Murray. Something reasonabe...sure, otherwise, look elsewhere and continue to fill other holes.

5.5 million a year, 4 year contract. Possibly a bit more, but I don't hit 7. If we don't retain Murray, I'd draft an RB in the second round after going defense on the 1st pick and bringing in a guy on defense in FA.

Ask Garrett which option he would like....................

Option A.................Rashad Jennings type of RB for $2 million a season and sign Suh.

Option B.................pay Murray franchise player like contract.

The pie is only so big and everybody cant get paid so you have to make sacrifices as to where you put your resources. Every penny paid to Murray is one penny less that can be paid to somebody else.

Well, if Garrett has to choose between the two he's going with Murray....

You think so? I'm in agreement with him. I don't mess with this chemistry. I personally believe this team is lead by Murray, Dez, Witten and in a more laid back approach Romo. I think Sean Lee is a leader in some ways to as well as Scandrick. I'd personally make sure I retain all those guys if possible but I understand Murray may be offered too much money to retain.

This team and defense can't afford those first 2 picks not to be defensive picks. I can't invest a 2nd round pick in this offense again. Not right now. Not when our defense needs the youth and help.

From what I have read we can basically tag him with an option to match any offer he might get, seems like that would be the best thing to do right now. We might find he doesn't get that much in free agency (wouldn't surprise me one bit)

The man is coming off one of the best season's in football history and a lot of you guys are ready to just toss him out the door. He's 26 and not even reached the prime of his career yet. Changing Murray is changing the identity of the team. You want to turn the Triplets into a Duet.. What's next? The remaining cyclops? Ok, that was a joke, but seriously... so what if we give him 8 mill a year. We wouldn't have made the playoffs without him. Yeah he dropped the ball, but how many of you have dropped your pen at work, or your hammer, or misquoted a price, or whatever you case may be. Yeah he made mistakes, but nobody's complaining about his numbers. When you think of how the Cowboys have misspent 3 or 4 million dollars over the past decade I bet you'd all line up for a front seat at the parade! If you're gonna overspend you overspend on a guy like Murray. If you're insistent on grabbing a back in the mid rounds, then do so and give him time to learn the system. But all this whoopla over spending a few extra mill on the league's leading rusher behind arguably the league's best line is crazy talk. Pay that man! Draft heavy on the D. But don't break up the best of what we've got. There's money to be found when we cut bait with guys who are far less productive than Murray. We'll regain cap space through those cuts and still be able to get a valuable free agent. Maybe two.. All I can say is if we do cut him we'll be a lesser team for it. Pay that man a reasonable salary.

I hope the offer is closer to $5 million per year for four years. Not that he can't earn more on the open market but a decent offer.

I would love it if he would take 5 but chance are it will be around 6 to 7 and I hope the Cowboys get it done, unlike some here I don't think you can grab any RB and get the overall production that he brings. There seems to be this feeling for some that RB are a dime a dozen and I maintain all JAGS are a dime a dozen getting real talent and keeping it cost. Same with Dez there are many WR out there but if you want to keep a WR of Dez caliber you pay. I think in the end both Dez and Murray will get signed.
