Mike Jenkins - To Trade or Not to Trade?

After our 2012 draft, the topic of Mike Jenkins should be one open for debate.

There were stories regarding the team making him available for trade as well as stories of Jenkins himself requesting one.

Regardless of what happened, I feel that there is now way the team should trade him at this point.

The team finally has some quality depth at the cornerback position after a year of struggles in 2011. I feel that preventing a repeat in 2012 far outweighs any 'future considerations' trading Jenkins would bring.

I also feel that the team will likely get a compensatory pick when Jenkins does leave next year that would equal or surpass whatever they would get in a trade at this point.

So, for the record, my vote would be against moving Jenkins.

I'm sure the Cowboys entertained the thought of trading Jenkins on draft day to either recoup the 2nd round pick they traded to move up for Claiborne or to package him to move up into the 2nd round. The chances of trading Jenkins prior to the season is pretty slim now unless someone offers the Cowboys a #2 for him. They may even pull the trigger for a #3 but I think they like the security of having good depth at corner because you can never have enough corners.

I agree. It comes down to what kind of offer you can get. With the draft now over those team who were and maybe still in need of a CB may be willing to make an offer worth it to the Cowboys. If not then keep Jenkins

Totally agree. You need to have quality depth at the starter position and they finally have it. The Alan Ball and Pete Hunter type of depth really hurt the team over the years. They are 4 deep now with room to groom 1 or 2 more young ones so its really perfect.

The worst move would be to take a strength of the team and then turn it back into to just average by trading Jenkins. For a 5th/6th rounder, it makes no sense at all. Hopefully Jerry is just trying to see what he can get but hope they don't feel any need to get rid of him this year.

What does 'worth it' mean to you?

To me, there's not much 'worth it' to trade away quality depth for 2012 for a 2013 promissary note.

Especially nothing a contract year player coming off of major shoulder surgery would get you.

As I questioned the Eagles trading away Asante Samuel for a bag of chips, I would not want the Cowboys to do the same with Mike Jenkins.

After all, if you do, you're still just one injury away from Scandrick starting and having virtually no depth.

What round compensory pick do you think Jenkins would fetch? My guess is it would be pretty equivalent to what they would get if they traded him outright.

For now, I would keep him till after camp is over and see if there are any interested parties then or later in the year. There are always bound to be injuries during camp or a team understanding that they need more CB help than they thought and try and trade for him.

Only real concern would be in keeping him now, and I think this is where the compensory pick might be the fallback plan, is if he reinjures himself. Unfortunately, my guess is the compensory pick wouldn't be very high at all in that case.

It's scary to think of what we actually ended the season with and now with the moves they've made, you realize what bad shape the team was really in.

Honestly I rather trade him now and get something for him. His shoulder could be worse then originally known and could get hurt week one and we could have had someone be in his spot through out training camp. Just think its time to part ways

You always need 3 to 4 good corners. The NFL is shifting to a pass first league.

he is only making like 1.05 mil this year. definite cheap, quality depth. no reason to get rid of him unless we get a great offer

Well it would have to be a pretty good offer for me to be in favor of it. Right now, we have 4 CBs and a bunch of camp fodder, if we trade Jenkins and with one injury we are looking at Teddy Williams or CJ Wilson as a #3 CB......not good.

I keep him no matter how much he hates it unless we can get another CB in return (not likely).

I question if he could be traded anyway.

Who knows if he could even pass the physical?

Here's why you keep him:
1. He's not hugely expensive to keep
2. When healthy he's more than a competent corner
3. Injuries will happen to the other corners
4. The team wouldn't get anything for him at this moment
5. He's likely to be very motivated to excel given this is his contract year

I would not trade Jenkins for a bag of chips. Your claim seems to be based on we would get nothing to very little for Jenkins and if that is the case then I agree you keep him. Now a team may place more value on Jenkins knowing that he likely will come back healthy this season after surgery and getting him in before he hits the FA market they likely could get him signed easier than over paying in the FA market next season.

I have said before just about any player is tradable if the price is right but that does not mean I give him up for nothing.

Mike Jenkins has to go out and have his best year....that works to BOTH our advantadge and his advantadge. If he does not..he will have to do what Carlos Rodgers just did in San Franciso. And that is a risky move...because if it does not pan out...you risk being a journeyman for the REST of your career and will NEVER get a big payday....which is what is going to happen to Martellus Bennet in my opinion. If Bennett had shown the maturity and commitment it takes to play behing a future HOFer...he would be in line for a bigger role in Dallas. I am going to guess the deal he signed in NY was a deal Dallas would have easily done for him here...but he is betting on himself...so good luck. But if I were Jenkins...he better ball out....because that is the ONLY way he is going to get paid by ANYBODY next year.

Well most of the reason why they were willing to give him away for a bag of chips is cause he had a huge contract.

Since Jenkins is still under his rookie contract, that isn't an issue, but teams don't usually like to deal for a player in the last year of his contract anyway.
