Memory serves me, we already had one of our own coaches ice his kicker years ago against the Ravens.

Then there was the Browns making that first down near their goal line and the Cowboys put their offensive unit on the field. It was as if McCarthy wasn't paying attention to the refs or the game sometimes. The refs clearly signaled first down and that was the time to challenge. He didn't. What had him so distracted that he lost track of downs and the play clock?

He called a fantastic first half. The second half was too conservative but still helped win the game.
being play caller can distract a HC from what is going on in the game.
They are totally into the play sheet and what they are going to call next.
JG used to mess up because of this.

A HC should not be playcaller. or if he is then let someone else be game mgr.

Try again.

Even if it didn’t reset…..they should ALWAYS be paying attention to it and call time out if needed. Or they should have alerted the refs ahead of time to reset it.

Instead…..they were completely oblivious to the situation until the flag was thrown.
Dude -- you are clueless. The coaches are not going to sit there and stare at the clock. That would be incredibly inefficient.

Clock starts after the refs set the ball. Professional coaches are multitasking -- a good coach knows he's got a good 30 seconds before they need to pay attention to it. Do you really want your HC staring stupidly at the clock to make sure it is reset after each play?

that is not the end of the game. that is just gaming it out until it gives a facile appearance you want.

what I think is that you guys are reacting to your anger as usual -despite a win- and looking for things to whinge about.
You said why should he waste a timeout due to a ref mistake. Easy, he has two left, there is four seconds left, he loses those timeouts anyway so just call one there and be done with it.

If he wants to ***** about the ref mistake, great. But there is no reason to not use a timeout there given only four seconds left and you had two to burn anyway.

That is not all I said. I know you like to fixate on what you think you can win and ignore the other arguments.

It was pointed out that the refs told him that the clock would be rewound and it was not. He had multiple conflicting authoritative sources of information. Just because it was simple and straightforward with your ticker and Tirico mindset doesn't make it such a clear cut decision on the field.

And despite all your handwringing there was no risk in this game. See scoreboard.

One of the top priorities for a head coach is game clock and time management.

And McCarthy continues to stink at it.

How many times does he get to bungle it before he gets held accountable?

He robbed Aubrey of his chance to make NFL history with the 66 yarder.
We had 2 timeouts, and a delay of game was absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!

This will bite us again in the future like it has in the past.
Not nearly as bad as he continues to leave time on the clock for the opponent to drive the ball downfield before halftime.

The officials made a mistake. They are supposed to reset the clock when they let the defense substitute.

The chains had 4th down on their markers.

This! I don't know why people have such a hard time with this. The chains clearly said 4th down and everybody played it that way. If they had made it first down McCarthy probably would have challenged the spot. This business of looking for any and every reason to trash our players and coaches makes this place unbearable at times.

Thanks. It still doesn’t explain why they didn’t call a timeout.

They are still responsible for preventing a penalty in that situation. There’s a giant time clock in the stadium that everyone can see.

The fact the refs made a mistake doesn't change the fact that someone on the sideline should have seen the play clock winding down and used one of their two remaining timeouts with 4 seconds left.

The refs are going to make mistakes, we have clearly seen that. But when you can avoid a penalty after the refs messed up, you should do that. If you want to argue their screw up, great. But the fact is, someone should have seen the clock not rewound earlier and called timeout to avoid the penalty. The fact this happened with McCarthy, who has a history of mismanagement at the end of halves, shouldn't surprise anyone.

Way too many short yardage passes that fell to the ground on 3rd downs, resulted in a sloppy 2nd half.

Exactly. The refs not doing their job is not an excuse for McCarthy not doing his.

The Cowboys clock management was awful. Can the players other than team captains not call a time out?

Ahh the Tirico krew is still in force thinking that because they understand something it is important.

We were 20-3 at that point.

No. Watch the replay.

Clock did not reset -- Mc and Fassel were both on the refs. There were many instances today of clocks and downs being messed up. Pay attention to things that do not fit your agenda.
They should still be watching the clock and used a timeout instead of just letting it go down to zero and crying about the refs.
