Mike McCarthy's upcoming decision

For most of this season I thought like many Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy‘s tenure in Dallas was over either during the season or more likely, at season’s end. Now after what has transpired on the field plus the exit of Bill Belechick from the NFL stage, I’m thinking it is more likely Jerry tries to keep Big Mac in Big D.

Why is Jerry likely choosing to try and extend McCarthy? Because he probably knows the number of talented NFL coaches wanting to come to Dallas as the next sacrificial lamb on the Jones failure altar is dwindling like a flower in the Texas heat. The luster on the star ain’t what is used to be.

Sure, the Star is worth a lot of money but any self respecting HC who wants what all great NFL coaches have - getting to choose their own assistants, having full control of the locker room and discipline, having control of the message to the media, and having the final say with player usage and playing time is not happening. In Dallas, those powers reside in the owners box.

Jerry’s recent positive comments about both McCarthy and DC Mike Zimmer give plenty of room for the possibility that Big Mac and Zimmer along with some other assistants will be re-upped with new contract offers.

The question is will Mike McCarthy want to come back? He will probably have at least three options:
  • Stay in Dallas after given a 2-3 year contract extension.
  • Take another HC job like in New Orleans where he has ties from his early days as an assistant coach.
  • Retire. He will be 62 next season, so retiring is not out of the question.
If I was Mike McCarthy, there is no way I’m coming back to this situation. He’s had 5 seasons to try and bring Dallas back to at least a conference championship game and has failed. Winning one wild card game in 5 years is not what he was hired to do. And he’s seen how his bosses have no problem throwing entire seasons away with no consequences other than to fire those under them,

Big Mac has had 5 years to watch up close and personal what a challenge it is to try and coach a professional football team where the owner is also the president, GM and face of the franchise. IMO he would be crazy to stay here.

Decisions will have be made soon. What will they be?

Unfortunately it doesn't matter because the ownership (root of all the problems) won't change. Bringing in a better coach only helps if that coach also brings in his own staff, has a big say in personal and how things run. None of that really happens under jerry

My question is…if McCarthy is offered to stay, will he?

I doubt any of the other teams with openings would interview him . Why wouldn’t he come back if offered ? And it would have to be at least 3 yrs . 1 is too short obviously and after the first season you’re down to lame duck again in yr 2 so I’m guessing his agent wants 3 yrs minimum .

There is a small part of me that would love to see Jerry try to bring McCarthy back and McCarthy give him the middle finger on the way out, but I doubt it happens.

Unless a team like Chicago is interested in him, I just dont see why he would leave. Personally I think that would make a ton of sense if they dont go the Ben Johnson route, but thats another topic. Is going to coach the Jets or Saints a better situation? I doubt it.

I bet McCarthy comes back to Dallas, Schottenheimer takes the fall and Jerry hand picks the next young offensive guru to learn under MM for a couple years as they are groomed as the next HC.

Yeah why would they interview one of the most successful head coaches of his era? The guy is clearly a bum.

Oh, Bob. Not you too with this nobody wants to coach in Dallas stuff.
We already know our own version of Dan Campbell is waiting in the wings in the form of Jason Witten. He just won a small private school state championship and we all know that makes him ready and qualified to be an NFL HC and more importantly, he’s a former TE like Dan Campbell who can scream and look tough in the locker room.

I think Jerry is comfortable with Mike and will bring him back with then excuse of injuries and it took awhile to adjust to Zimmer. If he is brought back, get him an offensive coordinator and he cannot call plays. I think we need to move on but Jerry is Jerry and gave JG 10 years

Jerry loves fans like you. You'd be here another 30 years blaming head coaches for the sins of the owner.
In the Jones model of leadership, JJ and SJ get to “have all the fun” playing football big shots but none of the accountability for failure. They’re like guys at the craps table rolling snake eyes over and over but with enough money to stay at the table regardless.

But the other part of the Jones leadership model is it places coaches and other mid-level people as the sacrificial lambs for the sins of the Jones. When we fans fail to point the finger where it belongs, another cash register rings at the star.

I expect it to prove interesting to see whether or not McCarthy is inclined to forgive Jerry's reluctance in displaying real confidence in him. Mike may or may not be willing to undergo another season of serving a front office that hasn't exactly displayed their loving acceptance of his skills. I'm looking forward to seeing exactly how that intriguing question is handled. You just can't make this stuff up -- that's for sure! o_O

As far as the players are concerned, they appear to respond to MM with a valid level of acceptance. Their performances state as much!
MM might not be perfect, but for the time being, he's ours. There's no getting around that, my friends. :muttley:

Coming into this game with the Panthers, the Cowboys had played five straight games where they were either penalized as much or less than their opponent. Additionally, over their past eight games, the Cowboys had just one game where they were penalized more than the opponent.

When things kicked off against Carolina, the Cowboys were ninth in total penalties called against them. That may not sound great, but Dallas has been top five in penalties each of the last three seasons, so ninth is making real progress. After the game, though, the Cowboys moved back up to fourth. That’s a big climb, but 14 penalties in one game will do that.

So where do the Cowboys stand in net penalties? Excellent question! With three weeks left to go in the season, Dallas has the fourth-best net penalty standing at +13. That means that, on the whole, opponents have been called for 13 more penalties than the Cowboys. The three teams ahead of them are the Vikings, Steelers, and Rams, all led by head coaches who are in the running for Coach of the Year honors.
