Mike McCarthy's upcoming decision

If I am correct Jerry Jones said during the playoffs during MM first three seasons that the Cowboys needed to make a deep playoff run. If not there may be a coaching change. Well they did not and Jerry did not. This season Jones seems to be really waffling with what to do. Keep the coach or make the change. So, the first burst of drama this offseason will be who will be the 2025 HC.

Much more drama will follow with the Parson contract stuff. My guess Parsons will end up being with the Cowboys and the highest paid D player in the league. The players always seem to win in negotiations with the front office like Prescott and Lamb last season.

I see the Cowboys losing some guys to FA and with limited cap space unable to fully replace all of them in FA. I see them adding some quality in the draft but not enough to meet all the team needs.

Thus in short I see the upcoming off season much like the last. Filled with headlines and drama and struggling to maintain the status quo roster wise.

I think Jerry is still saying all the right things, because he thinks there's a chance we're going to the playoffs.
Once that fantasy comes to an end, I think the tune will begin to change. Especially if we lose in bad fashion as usual.

There is a small part of me that would love to see Jerry try to bring McCarthy back and McCarthy give him the middle finger on the way out, but I doubt it happens.

Unless a team like Chicago is interested in him, I just dont see why he would leave. Personally I think that would make a ton of sense if they dont go the Ben Johnson route, but thats another topic. Is going to coach the Jets or Saints a better situation? I doubt it.

I bet McCarthy comes back to Dallas, Schottenheimer takes the fall and Jerry hand picks the next young offensive guru to learn under MM for a couple years as they are groomed as the next HC.
While MM isn’t good enough to outcoach the Shanahans and LaFleurs of the league, he is smart enough to know he has little shot to win here over the next few years.

However it was always about the pay day for him, so it depends on if he feels as if he has enough cash vs how much he has had enough of Jerry’s act.

Not sure why you feel as if getting the NO job is a slam dunk. Interim aside, I can’t think of anyone that got a third shot.

I don’t see him not coaching for the rest of time, but it’s likely as an OC unless he extends here, which I consider to be very likely at this point.
Something else Mike might would consider is the fact that he is from up north and he might prefer being back up there. I know when Dallas played the game up in Pittsburgh, he said that he enjoyed being back up there.

Coming into this game with the Panthers, the Cowboys had played five straight games where they were either penalized as much or less than their opponent. Additionally, over their past eight games, the Cowboys had just one game where they were penalized more than the opponent.

When things kicked off against Carolina, the Cowboys were ninth in total penalties called against them. That may not sound great, but Dallas has been top five in penalties each of the last three seasons, so ninth is making real progress. After the game, though, the Cowboys moved back up to fourth. That’s a big climb, but 14 penalties in one game will do that.

So where do the Cowboys stand in net penalties? Excellent question! With three weeks left to go in the season, Dallas has the fourth-best net penalty standing at +13. That means that, on the whole, opponents have been called for 13 more penalties than the Cowboys. The three teams ahead of them are the Vikings, Steelers, and Rams, all led by head coaches who are in the running for Coach of the Year honors.
A noticeably light topic on these boards this season. It's almost as if fans know they can't use biased refs as an excuse for a clearly non-competitive team thus proving it was nothing but an excuse all along. I'm sure the die-hards are thinking that even the refs don't like kicking a team when they're down, lol. What say you, @Cowboys5217 ? You had a few penalty "theories" about the number of penalties called on this team over the years. Haven't heard that spiel from you this season.

For most of this season I thought like many Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy‘s tenure in Dallas was over either during the season or more likely, at season’s end. Now after what has transpired on the field plus the exit of Bill Belechick from the NFL stage, I’m thinking it is more likely Jerry tries to keep Big Mac in Big D.

Why is Jerry likely choosing to try and extend McCarthy? Because he probably knows the number of talented NFL coaches wanting to come to Dallas as the next sacrificial lamb on the Jones failure altar is dwindling like a flower in the Texas heat. The luster on the star ain’t what is used to be.

Sure, the Star is worth a lot of money but any self respecting HC who wants what all great NFL coaches have - getting to choose their own assistants, having full control of the locker room and discipline, having control of the message to the media, and having the final say with player usage and playing time is not happening. In Dallas, those powers reside in the owners box.

Jerry’s recent positive comments about both McCarthy and DC Mike Zimmer give plenty of room for the possibility that Big Mac and Zimmer along with some other assistants will be re-upped with new contract offers.

The question is will Mike McCarthy want to come back? He will probably have at least three options:
  • Stay in Dallas after given a 2-3 year contract extension.
  • Take another HC job like in New Orleans where he has ties from his early days as an assistant coach.
  • Retire. He will be 62 next season, so retiring is not out of the question.
If I was Mike McCarthy, there is no way I’m coming back to this situation. He’s had 5 seasons to try and bring Dallas back to at least a conference championship game and has failed. Winning one wild card game in 5 years is not what he was hired to do. And he’s seen how his bosses have no problem throwing entire seasons away with no consequences other than to fire those under them,

Big Mac has had 5 years to watch up close and personal what a challenge it is to try and coach a professional football team where the owner is also the president, GM and face of the franchise. IMO he would be crazy to stay here.

Decisions will have be made soon. What will they be?
The Saints? I think he would stay in Dallas.

My question is…if McCarthy is offered to stay, will he agree to stay?
Bob ........just my take, but I'm 100% confident the only he stays if there is no other head coaching opportunity. If the Jags, Saints or Giants make an offer, hes' gone IMO. Couple of darts.....
** A new 5 years contract vs Jerry's 2-3 year extension
** Lower bar/standards .......success with the team's list is winning season vs NFCG/Super Bowl with the Cowboys
** Remember earlier in the season he admitted, " no one wants to be on a one-year deal". That tells me he believes he deserved an extension before the season started or at a very min more help. Jerry offered none, zero.......left him out the dry.

I have a sneaky hunch Jerry's getting vibes from at least 1-2 teams showing interest in Mike. He and Stephen did some serious a___ kissing during their recent interviews.

Yeah but I don’t think he is anywhere close to being able to write his own ticket.

If he doesn’t extend here, he is probably out of the league for 2025, and an OC thereafter.

Maybe I’m missing one or two, but I don’t see anyone who has gotten a third shot at HC.

His agent is going to tell him to take Jerry’s three year offer.

What about the Saints, Jags or even the Giants? I"m hearing Vrabe and Johnson are the only locks for offers but we could have as many as 6-7 openings ( Giants, Jags, Bears, Saints, Bengals, Raiders, Dolphins ).

I don't think Mike can get out here fast enough if he gets another offer for the reason mentioned ..........little or no control over his own staff and players. Keep in mind he put his house on the market in July.......

I can see some points here…that he did well with what Jerry gave him and in dealing with Jerry. But that doesn’t excuse 1 playoff win or the Green Bay game and how “prepared” we were or the ugly blow out losses this season or the constant lack of on field discipline. So I don’t see how some are backing him. His offense isn’t tearing up horrible Ds. Hes mediocre just like everything else Cowboy wise. Jerry’s the biggest issue but Mike has a ton of warts. He did when he left GB

I get that but you comparing playoff success. Some teams ( with vacancies ) would love to have a few consistent winning SEASONS. MM has proven that is at least his floor.

BTW.....There's a reason Dak and Parsons are showing strong support for Mike returning. The NFL agent community is a small circle. An article quoted a former agent calling the community the CNN of NFL news. Lots of players and coaches share the same agents.

Yeah there could be some very interesting ones in there. I don't understand the appeal of the Saints to him, I think that team has a few years of rebuilding in their future which isnt ideal for a HC over 60, but if you have connections the bridge is always there I guess. The Giants job might be one of the most interesting jobs in all of football. I'm not sure its set up quite as well as the Washington job was a year ago, but its similar with a few high end players to build around, some cap flexibility, and what might be a top 2 pick in the draft.

We will see, but I think there could be more interest in McCarthy than a lot of people think. He isnt a bad option for a team looking to simly regain some stability with their franchise, and help along a developing QB. I'm not sure if hes going to be the first choice on a lot of teams wishlists, but a NYG or Chicago just seems like a really good spot veteran offensive minded HC with a history of developing QBs.

Can we see a "mutual" parting, I think it would be more so his decision to leave and somehow they'll say MUTUAL. Isn't the guy trying to sell his home?

why wouldn't they want to show support, they're used to how things are here with Mike, someone else comes in and has a difference in opinion on things, players have to buy into it or not. Keeping it simple is easier than trying something new
