Mike Williams All but done in Detroit

The Lions refused to say anything about Mike Williams and his shaky future with the team, but they really didn't have to because actions speak louder than words. Head coach Rod Marinelli wanted to see what kind of commitment Williams was willing to make to being in shape, playing football and being part of the team.

Marinelli got his answer Tuesday. Williams was a no-show for the team's first Organized Team Activity, a decision that will likely result in Williams being cut at some point before the start of the regular season. At this point, it's too late for Williams to have second thoughts or even try to make amends. Clearly, Marinelli can't trust Williams and there's no way Marinelli is going to preach one thing to his team and also have Williams on the roster.

Don't look for Williams to get broomed immediately, though. The Lions will continue to try to trade him -- and they've had a few calls -- but the Lions have to find a deal that is good enough to offset the huge salary cap hit the team will take this season ($5.7 million). If the Lions wait until after June 1, they'll absorb only a $1.9 million hit this season with the remaining balance hitting the cap next year.

By the way, after Charlie Sanders was voted into the Hall of Fame in early February, Williams had his No. 88 yanked away from him. The Lions say it's because, while the numbers aren't officially retired, they don't give out the numbers of players who are in the Hall of Fame. That's true, but if Roy Williams was wearing No. 88, would the Lions have pulled it? Or would they have just said that after Roy Williams retires, no one will wear No. 88 again?

According to the team roster, Mike Williams is now wearing No. 81. It's almost a certainty, though, that Mike Williams will never actually wear that number during a Lions football game

Regardless of the quarterback, Detroit could have had a wide receiver corps which would have been feared for years. Now, they only have Roy Williams. Thankfully, he will be premier wide receiver for them, but it is a poor consolation prize considering what could have been.

I thought teams could designate a few cuts as "post-June 1" and release them immediately with the same cap benefit.

All this guy needs is the motivation. I still think something can be salvaged out of him... not saying it will, but if he gets motivated and back in shape, he can be a beast.

What a horrid start to his career...I honestly thought he was going to be a star.

That being said...bring him in, TO can be a great mentor for him.:D

2 receptions 28 yards 1 TD
That is not a pretty big day against Dallas. Not like the other receivers for Detroit had that day. It was a nice play on the TD reception by him.

I say give him a shot if the price is cheap and only a small bonus. Nothing wrong with bringing him in. What is the worst that can happen? You just cut him and are not out much money at all. It is a small risk if he is willing to sign a small contract. If not, you just move on to another player.

I would love to give him a chance to revive his life here ...... he would have to be cheap and look what happened when we gave Terry Glenn a chance.

As far as Detroit goes, correct me if I'm wrong, or have missed something about him, but to the best of my knowledge, Matt Millen is still in Detroit, correct??? To me, that is one of the biggest surprises to me, that Millen is "still" in his position in Detroit.....absolutely mind boggling, IMO!!!!!!!!

I loved Mike Williams in college. Once he got his first check, he was already planning his escape.

Another cautionary tale and a guy that I don't welcome at Valley Ranch.

That sucks, he was such a great player in college. Waste of talent.
I agree with you. I am really disappointed in him. It isn't his talent, it's his attitude. Maybe he just hates Detroit but IMO that's a piss poor excuse.

Apparently the Ford family really likes him. With owners like that, no wonder the Ford Motor Company isn't doing so well.

Well all you Jarrett fans could get what you wanted. We could still end up with a receiver like Jarrett and keep our 1st round pick for something better.

I agree Hos. A guy with that much talent who pisses it away because he doesn't like his situation is not a guy we want in Dallas.

People who compare Jarrett with him are vastly mistaken. Jarrett is a very hard worker and is a much more complete WR than Williams was coming out of college. Williams was a physical freak of nature and never had to work hard before. He got by on that in college but not in the pros. Jarrett practices hard and studies the game, he will be a star in the NFL.

Williams is welcome to sign with the Commanders. :lmao2:

I have the same problem.

I make several million dollars a year....have lots of public exposure...and do something for a living that zillions of people would LOVE to have the opportunity to do... (uh, no, I'm not referring to my being a moderator here)

But I just can't seem to get myself motivated.
