No, it wasn't a mistake. He had long overstayed his welcome here. Any success we had with his defenses here always seemed to be smoke and mirrors. Even the year we finished No. 1, I never really felt we had a dominant D. The pass rush was always an issue as well. The words "read and react" still give me nightmares.

He seems to have improved. A lot. That's a good thing for a coach. I don't want him back though. We don't need to be bringing back anyone that has previous ties with Jerry.

The smoke and mirrors is a ringing endorsement. He had successful defenses with very little talent. That points to good scheme and gameplan (i.e. good coaching).

The Bengals are the Cowboys of the AFC. And their defense under Zimmer has been decent but not dominant, kind of like when Zimmer was with Dallas. So why do we want him back?

Just saw a terrific piece on Mike Zimmer on ESPN.

What a terrific message and what a terrific coach we once had but becuz of Parcells and the 3-4..

..he was let go.

Big mistake.

Jerrah..

For once..make the right moves and bring him back to Dallas as our HC.

And his son.

if I recall, when he was DC people hated him for not blitzing, was referred to as Zimmywuss etc

I hear you Hook. In the past few years even when we have been eliminated, I have been interested in the other playoff games but this year, I am having trouble given how depressed I am over another blown division. I was out last night during the Saints-Eagles thinking I should be home watching now and even if we lost I would have been watching us in the post season. Thanks to Garrett I have little hope.

Would love to have him back as a d-coordinator; would not want him as a headcoach.

As big a fan of Zimmer as I am, I do not think he is HC coach material. IMO, he seems to lack the intangibles necessary to be a great HC. He is very good with his scheme and play calling but can he command an entire roster of athletes, formulate a long range plan, and acquire the necessary personnel needed to carry out his plan? I don't think so. :(

What makes you think he can't do those things?

I don't really know. He is a solid DC who puts his players in the right position to be successful in his scheme.

The biggest questions would be whether he can work with the front office in personnel acquisition as well as imprint his vision on his players.

He could be for 2015 though. That is precisely why I hope he gets his head coaching shot this year with someone.

If not, it is way too easy for Jerry Jones to bring him in, along with his comfort level.

This.

If they get Zimmer..they get a guy that can coach the defense..

..the rebuilding of the defense is primary.

Its outside Garrett's understanding.

And its by far the biggest need right now.

When it comes to offensive leadership...

we can find.someone to run that without Garrett.

He's just a complete failure as an offensive play caller and game planner.

Norv Turner would be an answer if we keep Romo as the starter.

If we draft a QB this season..

..then maybe not Turner but a college OC is needed..

Like a Chip Kelly type.

It would take one season of Zimmer here with this crop of players before people would be screaming he is the same Zimmer as before.

Not that Mike would be the problem. Because the problem is with the players.

But folks around here tie so much to the coach, much more than should be.

I will not pretend to know what kind of coach can succeed other than one who Jones respects enough to step back enough to allow to do his job.

I do know Zimmer is not much different from Garrett. A little more experienced, but will still have that comfort and familiarity of once being a trusted and loyal Jones employee. To me, that is not a good thing.

Oh..

If Summer came or whomever..

its going to have to be a 3 year commitment to draft, develop and get the new players into the schemes.

So I think you pick your poison.

Jerrah's already picked his.

Garrett and Romo.

We just all have to ride this into the ground.

True.

The Cowboy coaching tree has moved on from the Jimmy Johnson era.

And it's only been increased marginally under Parcells.

Those coaches were not Cowboy coaches..they were Bill Parcells disciples.

So Jones' options thin by the day.

Additionally..with the cap problems and lack of a high draft pick with which to begin the rebuilding..

..I can't see anybody coming here to do it.

Who?
