Commanders are interviewing him as well from what I read. We haven't looked at anyone for replacements yet...

Well, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that Zimmer could be available as a DC. There is a lot of talk about Lewis getting the door after this last playoff loss. If that happens, there is probably a new coaching staff and Zimmer might just be looking for a new job.

I never thought Zimmer should have been fired the way he was but that's here nor there. I do think Zimmer is one of the best young coaches in the NFL.

Probably no chance of getting Wade as a DC but he would also be a good one.

Ray Horton is another guy but he's probably going to get a HC gig somewhere. Maybe Detroit.

I would also seriously think about getting Mike Munchak in to see if he has any interest in an OL position or perhaps OC. While Munchak was OC for Tennessee, he had some great rushing teams. I would be interested in seeing what he could do for us.

I do know Zimmer is not much different from Garrett. A little more experienced, but will still have that comfort and familiarity of once being a trusted and loyal Jones employee. To me, that is not a good thing.
I think his personality is a lot different from Garrett's, though.

I just read Zimmer lost his top pass rusher and CB and still had a #3 D. The guy has always seemed to get the most out of Ds whether you think its smoke and mirror or not.

I don't want Zimmer.

His defenses continually fizzle down the stretch (remember all of those late December collapses?). In 2004, in the 4-3 scheme, we had one of the worst defenses in Cowboys history, under Zimmer. In 2006 in the 2nd season in the 3-4, the defense completely collapsed because Zimmer could not figure out how to defend running backs, even fullbacks (see Mike Karney) catching passes out of the backfield. To me, that was just as egregious as anything. In the final game of the regular season against Detroit, Parcells took the defensive playcalling duties back because they were so bad. Then he left mainly because he knew he wasn't going to be asked back, even if Parcells stayed.

He then went to Atlanta and stunk there.

The only time his defenses became consistently good was not until he went to the Bengals with Marvin Lewis, one of the best D-Coordinators in the past 20 years, as his head coach. Even still, here's a look at the Cincy defensive rankings under Zimmer according to FootballOutsiders.com:

2008: 15th
2009: 13th
2010: 17th
2011: 17th
2012: 10th
2013: 5th

They've been steady, but nothing I would exactly write home about outside of this season.

I remember Sean Payton struggling so bad in New York that Jim Fassel took away his play calling duties and the Giants offense surging afterward. Then Payton finally took over playcalling duties in 2005 for the Cowboys and I was quite unimpressed.

Even in 2006, I felt Payton's play calling with the Saints was a bit of luck and opposing teams struggling to prepare for Payton, Brees and Bush (and Colston). A couple of years afterward, Saints fans were calling for Payton's head. But, he started to identify his weaknesses and finally put together a solid defense and then won the Super Bowl and it is obvious that he has seen what Parcells would rip into him for throwing the ball way too much (as we saw in the Philly game, they marched right down using the running game and closed out the game).

Perhaps Zimmer is finally learning and could be the guy, but I have to really question it and his track record isn't bad, but it is far from stellar.

Did SF hired coaches and/or players from the 90s era team to get back to competing for a championship? I don't think so. This organizations needs to move on from the 90s team and try to establish a new era of Dallas Cowboys football. I guess if you're (JJ) not confident that you can forge a new winning era, then you hold on to the past.

That's why JJ loves the Garretts, Campos, and all the other ac's and front office personnel from the glory days, he has a comfort level with them and they are a part of the 90s era teams.

Different good.

Garrett just doesn't make me think of a guy who experienced any success anywhere..

..and I'm not talking about his one and only game where he beat the Packers.

That's it folks.

Whereas Zummer has had to produce everywhere he has gone and has..

..I realize we'd all like Lightning to strike again like when Jimster came..

..but Jones will never in his lifetime let another Jimster personality in VR.

Jones can't stand it.

So better off to get a guy like Zimmer and try to start rebuilding.

People also fail to realize the rules change and some coaches just get better with the rule changes. Sean Payton was never OC here, he was Assistant HC and Passing Game Coordinator. Most of his work prior to this was coaching QBs.

Zimmer wasn't the problem when he was here. Rob Ryan wasn't the problem. Wade Phillips as dc wasn't the problem. Monte Kiffen isn't the problem now. Dallas has consistently had accomplished and respected defensive coordinators in the last 15 years, but has had the same problems with the ends of games and the ends of seasons. It's because there's a talent deficit on this roster, and there has been since the early '90s. There's decent enough top end talent, but the depth is not there on the defensive side of the ball, especially up the middle. Any one of those DCs was/is good enough to win a championship. The roster, however, is not.

Yes, fans constantly want to chase away these guys. Then we see them go elsewhere and have success. You think we'd catch on based on that, that the problem is primarily with the talent (although I do think the problem for Ryan and Kiffen was magnified by injury).

The only one of those guys who was actually a big part of the problem was Phillips, and that's only because he was the head coach.

He called the plays in 2005. That was my point.

I hope the Commanders hire Zimmer. That would be fun to kick his butt twice a year.

I'm sure Parcells wanted conservative. The Seattle play-off game and the refusal to attack corners off the street wasn't a great game-plan. Payton abused Parcells the very next year, exposing the defense like a big joke.
