I heard when Austin found out he was being suspended, he pulled both his hamstrings. Out 12 months.

Ok, I see. Makes more sense now. Stuff like that probably happened quite a bit. People just don't know. Players weren't paid like they are today.
It wasn't just the money, I'm sure. There were probably threats made about their families and such too.

I think the issue is trying to avoid guys getting compromised in any way. Because if left beholden to big gambling they might be prevailed upon to influence NFL games. The mob don't care HOW they get you in their pocket. ... so long as they get you in their pocket.

Now I feel like an idiot because I knew this at one time. You're absolutely right. A player can become so much in debt, that he may feel the need to make it back with something he can control. They don't want their players in debt.

He should have been locked up here for stealing money for 3+ years.

I think the whole gambling thing is a double standard. The National Football League partners with Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings and FanDuel and by damn that's all about betting on NFL football. How can they be taking millions in from Gambling folks and say there isn't a conflict of interest. Many former NFL hall of famers are plugging this stuff every day on TV. The old slippery slope is being ignored by the league in their quest for more dollars. As my grandfather used to say everything is going to hell in a handbasket.

I sense a little ambiguity in the rules.

Dare I say, hypocritical?

The total hypocrisy of the NFL on this is truly unbelievable

I see some here trying to find a way to justify it

as regards some rather dumb rationals

Like being in debt. which is dumb

What some are saying being in debt to the mob is the problem; well to be blunt that is already covered in areas of the conduct policy as in not having anything to do at all with those in the Mafia, etc

NO, this is just good ol Goofsmell hypocrisy
