Hurd looked better than Austin today. Austin is OK in special teams but if he does show a lot of improvement in camp he will get cut.

I think we can see why Jerrah made sure the extension on Crayton was done when it was.

Like Jimmy Smith...?

Probably nowhere near that good, but the bottom line is that generally WR's take longer to develop, even "once in a lifetime" WR's like Calvin Johnson. Braylon Edwards was a Top 5 draft pick, and he didn't have his first good year until Year 3. Bowe was really the only rookie WR who did anything of note this year, and this was supposedly the best WR crop to come out in a decade. It's a huge learning curve to the NFL for that position, and only that much steeper of a curve when you come from freaking Monmouth University. I like what I see when Austin is on the field. NFL cornerbacks have a hard time keeping him from getting seperation. There isn't a pick in this year's draft that I know of that I would trade Austin's size and speed with. I think the WR's in this draft are crap. As long as he can contribute on special teams and pull his weight, I would be more than patient with him. And to cut him based on a day when even our most sure handed players were dropping passes left and right would be just foolish.

His problems with catching the ball is a lot more concern. Remember Randal Williams?

It's easier/possible to improve at catching the ball than improve speed/quickness.

Austin should practice catching 200 balls a day during the off season.

I don't have any faith in Hurd or Austin, to be honest. We're not going to be lucky enough to get by on the cheap at this position.

He has bad hands...he can't catch a spiral...if he could, we'd be using him on punt returns as well as the kickoff returns...the knock on him all along has been bad hands...you can't have a starting receiver who drops as many as he catches...he'd have to be consistantly putting up TO performances for anyone to overlook his drops.

I doubt he'll see the field in the playoffs...Hurd also dropped an easy one, but he's known for having good hands as evidenced later by his longer catch on the sidelines. Too bad we can't combine Austin's speed with Hurd's hands.

Frankly, I don't see either of them as bright spots in any starting lineup.

I don't think you'll see us stay content w/ the receiver position, look for us to add another one in the draft

though not in the 1st round

The Jimmy Smith comparison is invalid, he had two broken legs and appedicitis with the Cowboys. Thats why he was cut.

I have more faith in Hurd.
I saw Hurd stay after practice(TC in SATX) and work on catching balls with his hands only and catching balls while sitting down.
All using the machine.
I didn't see Austin do that.

It's also ridiculous because everyone knew Austin couldn't catch the ball and he went undrafted...Smith was a 2nd rounder who slipped from round 1.

What's everyone's opinion of this kid?

Does he have what it takes to stick around or are we looking at another Randall Williams (physically gifted but no production)?

He's shown the ability to get open, but is he someone that could be relied upon on a key 3rd down?

I wish we could combine Hurd's size, strength, and smarts and give him Austin's speed and quickness. He'll probably find him a job in this league for awhile because of his speed. He seems like a pretty smart player on ST, but when he gets out as WR he just can't put it together.
