Yeah in like 1992.

The key in today’s NFL is shutting down an elite QB and everytime they hand it off you should celebrate.

Not if the RB and the run game is eating you alive. Hell Cleveland ran for over 300 and we have several other games where teams ran for over 260 they did not even need to put the ball up very much.

In today's game, the majority of the rules are favored greatly towards the offensive side of the football. Elite defenses in today's game are the ones who create the most defensive turnovers and buckle down in the red zone, forcing teams to kick more FG's then scoring TD's.

Prior to Nolan's hire, the Cowboy Defensive Scheme was known to be more of the bend and don't break. Keep everything in front of you, prevent the big plays, force teams to drive the entire field and stiffen up in the red zone. What really hurt our defense was their inability to create any defensive turnovers what so ever, each game forced the offense to score over 30 points to be successful. If the offense had a bad day, their was zero chance for success.

When you look at the Cowboy Off-season there is a distinct rebuilding plan in place;

#1 priority was to fix stopping the run. If you cannot be successful on the early downs, you will have less of a chance of creating any impact plays. If teams are always 3rd an short, they have the ability to either run or pass, which makes it far more difficult to defend. You can never allow your pass rushers to just pin their ears back and rush the QB. The majority of the defensive additions all have something in common, they all are strong run defenders.

Their next priority was adding more playmakers to the back end, players who not only have plus ball skills, but legitimate instincts to create more turnovers. Both Diggs/Wilson exhibited such traits last season, they added Kazee who is a legitimate ball hawk with a strong track record of taking the ball away, both two corners drafted were viewed as potential playmakers at the position. They also added perhaps the best coverage linebacker in the class in Cox.

If the defense can return to that bend, don't break scheme, be more success on the early downs, the turnovers should come. With a team losing so many close games recently, that could flip the script.
Offenses are gonna score with all the new rules, I'd just send the house and reek havoc and try to create turnovers as often as the circumstances allowed.

Anecdotal.

Score points and Cleveland won’t run it.

As soon as another team realizes you can’t stop the run. That’s all they do is run the ball and chew up the clock. How do you not know this. It has nothing to do with what era

You have to do what’s unexpected I totally agree you have to create havoc. But you have to have the talent to do it. I love rebuilding the line back in corp

You have to be able to do both. And with the great line backing core we can achieve this

If you can control the running game, you can control the clock.
If you can control the running game, you can keep the opposing teams offense off the field, and give them fewer chances to score.
If you can work from the lead, you can not worry as much about the run and can get more one dimensional because if they run, the clock becomes the enemy.

Dallas had 26 turn overs last year. 6 by Rb's (Zeke). The rest were on the QB's or WR's. 23% TO happened due to the running game -- 77% due to passing.

Statistics say you are less likely to lose a game if you can run the ball.
Worse case -- Running means the QB/RB handoff can be bad, or RB fumbles.
Worse case -- Passing means QB fumble, QB sack, Interception, WR fumble..... etc

Running is conservative, and Passing is big risk, big reward. The NFL has tried to mitigate the risk by putting skirts on QB's, and changing the WR hit rules, but the game is still the same.
If an OC can be conservative and succeed -- he will.
If an OC has to take more risk to win -- he will.

To win in the league as the DC you need to make the other team get into risk mode, and then be better than them. Fact of the matter is, when an OC finds something that works, he usually keeps doing it till you stop it and it doesn't matter if it is running or passing.

Load Left/Right works great when you have great linemen and a great RB -- and the other team can't stop you with 8 men in the box. Makes play calling lots easier and gets WR manned up.

All of this game is offense finds something new/old that works, and then defenses find something to stop it. People usually don't go back to the older stuff only because there is already a documented way to stop it. The more this game changes, the more it stays the same.

Plans never include a double pandemic, covid and injuries, in the same season as a new coaching staff.

The first step for the defense improving is for it not to be the 2020 season.

This really is about where it is going. I think Dallas is smart for getting so many guys who can make plays on the ball.
