Mom makes daughter wear horrible thrift store clothes to ‘teach her a lesson’ for bullying other students .

I'd say she made her point. 10 years old would be...5th grade in the US. What I like about this is that it was the result of first talking to the kid and not thinking the lesson was sinking in. It also made the point to anybody else who saw it and asked why she was dressed that way.

I wonder what the other girl's mom thought about the object lesson. And I wonder how this would go over here in the States.

My Wife did this. There was a girl who we found out was being teased because she was not wearing whatever the latest brand of crap was (her parents could not afford them) and we also found out that our Daughter was part of that behavior. My Wife sure did take her clothes away and replace them with Goodwill clothes and then posted it on FB. It only happened for a couple of days but I think it sank in.

I don't really get the whole, putting down people thing. Some people can't afford stuff. Hey, that was me as a kid. I could not afford to wear cool stuff or do stuff other kids could. Not saying this so anybody feels sorry or whatever, just saying, that's how it was, no big deal.

Those folks often turn out to be the ones who are successful later on. No shame in humble beginnings IMO. It's what you do with it after you make your way into the world that counts.

That's just how kid's are.

Teasing one another is just how it is and will always be. It sucks but that is just how it is.

It's good that some kids have parents that care enough to teach them a lesson like you did. A lot of kids don't have that guidance and they act this way their entire life.

That's punishment? We would go Segunda shopping every school year.

So, let's see, ..in order to show her step-daughter that bullying the poor is wrong, .. she made her wear clothes from where the "unfortunate and poor" have to shop.

There's a good lesson.

She is singling out, and labeling a class of people just like her daughter did.

Her punishment was to make her daughter wear clothes, that others have to wear because that is all they can afford.

That's like making her wear clown ears for making fun of someone with big ears.

She should move to Brooklyn, people wear that sort of stuff all the time and not for punishment.

What should her punishment have been?

no she made a point that you cannot judge people by their clothes. (Even though we do as adults). Its called being humble.

I don't see the 'walk a mile in their shoes' approach as making fun of the shoes as much as it is putting the child in a position to understand what it is she was originally mocking.

It's not where I'd have started, but if I didn't think my message was being heard loudly and clearly, I'd have definitely considered it. It sounds like it might have worked, anyway.

No, she did judge the people by the clothes that they wear, and by where they shop.

She punished her spoiled brat by making her shop at the lowly "thrift shop", and wear the "awful" clothes that poor people wear.

Fail.

I'm not so sure punishment was in order as much as a big dose of reality and humility.

The lesson here is not that you will get punished if you make fun of people, .. the lesson here is have compassion on the less fortunate and not make things worse for them by making fun of them because but for the Grace of God, it could be you.

Perhaps spend an afternoon serving lunch at a soup kitchen, .. or helping at the mission, .. or being a "buddy" at a Challenger Little League game.

Anything to let her see that people are not as fortunate as she is, and through no fault of their own.

But if a 10 yr old child is already beginning to act this way, the Mom has already messed up somewhere.

I don't think the thrift store attire would've been the route that I'd have gone. Simply because I actually like shopping in stores like that. They have some good deals in there if you dig around enough.

I think volunteering at a shelter or somewhere similar to appreciate what she has and how you can be one paycheck away from being in the same position.

In addition to some other disciplinary methods I could think up.

There's thrift-shopping, and then there's thrift shopping. I think we an all agree that there are clothes to be found there that make the mom's point without necessarily representing the best that thrift shops have to offer. Some of those dresses in the pictures were among the worst of the worst. That was probably part of the fun in making the point. :)

No I think you are just imposing your own views of the poor on here.

This is the "walk a mile in their shoes" punishment.
