[snip] ... Three, with Jason Garrett facing a win or else season, nobody's going to convince me he was the driving force behind this move. I think this was the owner and his son thinking they know better and the head coach rolling over and showing his freckled belly. If I'm right, it's set up to fail. I don't care about sound bites from the team after the fact. It simply doesn't pass the smell test that Garrett decided to add a defensive scheme change and transitional period to his plate entering a season where clearly his job is on the line.

The owner talked about making people uncomfortable. That's what he was referring to. A Jerry Jones driven offseason has never worked.

On the contrary. If Garrett truly believed that Ryan could not deliver, it makes perfect sense to go in another direction before Ryan dragged him under. If Garrett believes that his job is on the line, he would want to cut loose any anchor he thought might be holding him back.

I'll hold my breath.

I'm still reeling from all those "Rob Ryan is gonna turn us into a top 5 D" threads from 2 years ago.

I no longer buy into the hype machine that is the Dallas Cowboys. It's down to two simple and related things. Give me wins and give me playoffs. I really don't care how we get there anymore.

Changing the co-ordinator makes sense. Completely ditching the system you've been running for seven years in what amounts to a make or break season for you as HC doesn't.

There are only two ways that this move is logical. Either Garrett has a firm commitment from Jones that ensures his job security past 2013 (seems unlikely given the comments we've heard, but you never know) or Jerry made this move unilaterally.

actually its perfect

this is the best built-in excuse for failure this year for garrett

i can hear it now

"this coaching staff needs at least 1 more year, it was the players first year in a new defense, what do you expect?"

it may not pass the smell test but it absolutely passes the 'stench' test

AFAIK reports never came out that Kiffin didn't have the talent to work with, all the stories were that he was unable to effectively communicate his scheme to his players.

Did not have that problem in the NFL players and young coaches seemed to learn a lot from Kiffin. In ways kind of like Jimmy Johnson great success in Dallas yet little with the dolphins. Sometimes it is just the situation you walk into.

when you are a career under-achiever like garrett you try to build in excuses for failure, you hide behind cliches like process and stacking, etc

what exactly has garrett achieved on his own merits? back-up QB? everything else has been handed to him

and if it is not a failure?

Garrett interviewed these coaches there is no evidence that Jerry did. As GM does he have a role in hiring of new coaches? Of course as all GM have a role. Hell Garrett is not writing checks that is Jerry. I have heard from the critics no good coach would work here in Dallas yet we have 2 in Kiffin a well respected man in football and Rod Marinelli a successful DC in his own right. Yet all the critics can do is complain.

I have no doubts that Garrett is on the hot seat to produce a winner and he has brought in some quality member of his staff. Looking at the staff as a whole it is looking pretty solid from Callahan, Matt Eberflus, Jerome Henderson, Kiffin and Marinelli.

I don't think it guarantees victory but it is a pretty impressive staff that will be working for this team.

that is the beauty of it

it is a no-lose situation

we win: see the great changes garrett made? he is a great HC

we lose: he needs at least 1-2 more years with all the changes in coaches and players

for all the people saying this is a make or break year for garrett, absolutely not

garrett will be here next year unless we completely tank it

I don't think that is the case at all. I think if Dallas fails as they have the past 2 seasons to make it to the playoffs Garrett will likely get canned.

I hope so to. As I said looking at the staff as a whole I see some very good quality coaches on this staff and sorry if I find that to be very encouraging for this team. I think we do have some very good talent on this team and some avg talent but quality coaches can get the most out of the guys they have. Kiffin and Marinelli defense is not overly complicated I think the players will be able to pick this defense up and be able to play more aggressive because you are not over thinking it.

Yeah and considering over the last 8 games of the season the Cowboys avg 28 points a game I don't see why people should not be encouraged. I’m not going to sit here and say we are a shoe in for post season but I do think if we can get better play from defense and more turnovers out of the defense we have a chance to put together a good season and have a real shot at doing something.

On the game tape I looked at when watching TJ McDonald, USC had maybe one upper classman in the entire front 7. He had 5 sophomores and a freshman starting in the front 7. The pass rushers were so bad that Kiffin had to line up McDonald as the weakside nickel pass rusher. I would be curious to know how many safeties were their team's nickel weakside pass rusher.

Edit: This was their depth chart last year. Seems to be an insane amount of underclassmen in the two deep, particularly in the front 7. Seems as though there was a mass exodus of players who would have been Juniors and Seniors in 2012 who left the program after Carroll skipped town and the NCAA laid down the hammer in 2010 (The NCAA didn't penalize players who transfered after the sactions were handed down).

The offense, on the other hand, doesn't fill me with confidence.

Why? Haven't you heard? Jerry's gonna get us a bunch of new receivers and stuff! Maybe even make a "splash" and trade away a couple of high draft choices for an overrated veteran receiver!

.......Inman should be commended for pointing out how young they were: that's a fact, and the probation and his bone headed son were to blame BUT they also had a CRAP ton of talent.

In the end, I can honestly say you have to look at the man's WHOLE career and not judge him by one horrific year with his son's dysfunctional squad. I'm VERY confident Coach Marinelli will help Monte improve this D'....I'm less and less worried schematically as the days pass and more and more worried talent wise.

Our dline is VERY thin and our safeties are NOT what he needs to run this D'. WE don't have much cap space to be active in FAgency so....it's the draft or bust for 2 linemen, a linebacker and at least one safety: that's a tall order. Sure would be nice if a couple guys from last year's draft could man UP. (Johnson and WIlber come on down)
