Changing the co-ordinator makes sense. Completely ditching the system you've been running for seven years in what amounts to a make or break season for you as HC doesn't.

There are only two ways that this move is logical. Either Garrett has a firm commitment from Jones that ensures his job security past 2013 (seems unlikely given the comments we've heard, but you never know) or Jerry made this move unilaterally.

It is also logical if you have an opportunity to get one of the very best coordinators still in the business and believe you have the personnel on hand to make the switch (which we do).

Any new coordinator would have brought in a new system with new terminology and it is not as though none of our front seven have ever played in a 4-3 before.

Garrett gets rid of the person whom he believes can no longer help him and goes out and gets the very best person he can find to replace him.

By the way, if you think this is all Jerry's doing, what will you say if it works?

.......Inman should be commended for pointing out how young they were: that's a fact, and the probation and his bone headed son were to blame BUT they also had a CRAP ton of talent.

They might have a crap ton of talent down the road as those guys mature and become better football players, but last year they didn't have a single player in the Front 7 who will be drafted in April. They had Wes Horton who might get an undrafted free agent invite to camp, and no juniors (much less juniors who would get drafted if they declared).

It's crazy that one simple statement I made about issues Kiffin had with communicating his scheme to his players at USC was turned into some issue about whether Kiffin is a good coach or he was hamstrung by a "lack of talent" (loooooooooooooool) at USC.

Good lord people, you can say things that aren't completely glowing about the team every once in a while.

Communicating his scheme to his players at USC was touted as his biggest issue at USC by himself and the staff, so this blurb was surprising, even though they may be different kinds of communication.

Lane also said his father never could quite adjust to the NCAA rule limiting players’ contact with coaches to 20 hours.

“He’s an old-school coach now. He sleeps in the office. He doesn’t understand what a vacation means,” Lane Kiffin said. “He needs more time with the players because there are so many little rules in his defense to teach the guy. I don’t think we played really fast on defense, and that’s because we were thinking too much.”
