Montrae Holland...

I know many people, myself included, were disappointed when we didn't pick up one of our favorite o-lineman from the weekend lottery, instead winding up with a guy who sounds like good backup material (at least for a few seasons). Duke Robinson or Herman Johnson would have been positive pickups in the 5th, in my opinion. But thinking about it since then, maybe the reason we didn't grab one of those guys... is because we already have Kosier's replacement on the roster.

I was a fan of Montrae's when he came out in the draft a few years past, and I was elated when we picked him up from Denver last season. He took a while to learn the playbook, and then when he did get it I thought he looked good. In fact, we were dominating the trenches against the Steelers before Holland got hurt. As was said many times last year, he can just "anchor" in a way that Kosier cannot.

So, maybe we already have our upgrade at LG already on the roster?

I suspect, in this scheme, Holland may put Kosier on the bench by the end of TC...

That Steelers game still pisses me off. I really hate them.

We were doing well in the trenches until Holland got injured.

When Proctor came in, the momentum started turning.

Holland is an above average OG in the NFL. I don't think anyone will be surprised if he beats out Kosier.

fan of Holland. I think he's more than capable of starting. Reminds me alot of Big Baby ( Derrek Kennard ) in that people always seem to over look those guys until the game time and then watch them contribute quite a bit. Very underrated talent.

The problem is not with Holland, but with the people behind him. Proctor has no business staying in this roster. After Proctor, there isn't anybody. I know Kosier is the starter, but I'm not a fan of his. That's why I would have prefer to get both biggs in the 5th ( Robinson and Johnson ) because if nothing else they would have provided excellent depth. Both are long term projects, but the Cowboys didn't need starters. .

Love Holland and because of him I didn't see the need for a guard, I was really hoping we'd get a tackle. The coaches must know something we don't about Free....

Spagnola said something to the effect that the coaching staff had reservations about Free and McQuistan.

I don't know much about anything...but this I agree with!

Why he's here is beyond me? Maybe it's to keep the band togeather?

I have one. Both are free agents after this year so it will be nice if Brewster and someone else can some some good development this year because we will need them soon.

The Brewster pick was partly aimed at LG, imo. Phillips said he could play 4 offensive line positions.

I'm not sold on Holland. Vela said a scout said he was average, and Dallas can do better than average. I think he's a good depth player. He will probably get a shot to start. I think Kosier's spot may be deemed open, but I look for Kosier to win it.

I think if Kosier is healthy, he's going to start. That same scout told Vela that Kosier wears down at the end of the season and has played as low as 285.

Holland did play well against the Seahawks, so we will see.

amen. i hate them more than the skins i think. i could just strangle one of their fans with one of those stupid *** towels.

What I don't understand is why people still want to replace Kosier after last year basically proves he is the guy who holds our OLine together.

The guy is not a scrub. If Holland can beat him out, he'll have done a hell of a job.

I would be very surprised. And I think he's good too.

Agree with the OP. I was kinda peeved we even wasted a pick on one interior lineman. Few teams have 3 starting quality guards.

I also don't think anyone will be surprised if he shows up to camp out of shape and overweight and doesn't end up making the roster.

Holland's one of those guys who can be good when motivated, but he seems to lack self-motivation.

If Hudson Houck can motivate Montrae Holland, he has the ability to be a good player for us.

But I can say much the same for scores of others on our roster as well.

Does Holland want to be a starter or is he content just collecting an NFL paycheck?

I don't know.

We considered selecting tackle Phil Loadholt in the second before an offer came that allowed to move out.

We picked up OL Robert Brewster in the fourth, but it looks like we will project him inside to guard at first with tackle a possibility at some point in the future if things go well.

Would we have passed on Loadholt, a player I happen to be terrified of, in the second round if we were overly worried about our reserves tackles?

And despite our obvious desire to upgrade on special teams, would we have not at least added another left tackle developmental option at some point on day two to challenge Doug Free if big doubts resided with him?

I've never thought Pat McQuistan was a starting option at tackle, I just don't think he has the feet for pass protection in space on a full-time basis. I've long wanted McQ to move to guard, but the staff has always decided against it.

Free has the feet and athleticism to be a tackle, has he added enough strength to be functional as well?

No they would'nt. Hope they dont regret passing on Beatty though.

I think the Brewster pick was an attempt to make up for botching drafting Unger.

My eyes told me differently when the guy actually played. I agree with the folks talking about a huge change in the Pittsburgh game. I think Holland was very good when he played and added a physicality to the line.

I think Kosier has the edge until Holland beats him out.

And with Coach Wade's aversion to 'upsetting' his veterans, that's an uphill climb.

Here we go again. All last off season most people were ready to cut Kosier until he got hurt then he became the missing link. Kosier is our best option at LG. We played our best games when he was in the lineup. If he's healthy he will be the starter at LG.

And that is a cardinal sin for a coach to have.

We need competition, the more of it the better.

The coaches and front office have talked about the rookies competing for roster spots with young veterans this summer and it being a good thing.

So take it full circle.

Some starters are too secure because of their paychecks, maybe giving deserving youngsters more reps in practice will push them as well.
