In each of the past two seasons we've had 2 of our 3 RBs injured in multiple games. At least 1 of the 3 was either out or seriously limited in most of our games.

We have needed all three guys in each of the past two seasons.....yet we still have thread after thread suggesting we either cut or trade one of them.

I think there is no doubt that if we made this trade we would pick up another rb in the draft. Barber, i hate to say it i would prob do because of his contract but choice i couldnt bring myself to trade.

Although I hate Cromartie, I wouldn't be against Barber for AC, but only if there is some kind of other draft pick involved. Or Barber for a 2nd or 3rd and a late rounder would be even better IMO.

I do not want to see Jones or Choice leaving. They are too valuable, plus there is always RB's who slide and I think our scouts can find a talented 3rd RB in the late rounds.

yea no thanks. after reading he has like 7 kids in 5 different states...this guy is a mess. He also has like 4 paternity suites going on and admits its a distraction. No wonder SD is trying to unload this guy. I wouldnt be suprised if they just release him.
But wait, there's more.

The case was dropped because of a lack of evidence, still...

Do we really need another player complaining about the team?

This isn't what I'd call giving 100% effort. He's not happy with the Chargers, and it shows.

You can get a RB that does what Barber does in the 4th round.

Maybe the Saints will give them Reggie for Cromartie.

Pretty sure they want a possible feature back.

They must be drooling over Choice.

I said yes when the rumors first came out, but now I'm not so sure. I would offer them Barber though. See where it goes from there.

I wouldn't put it past them to try and feature him though, they were almost ready to feature Sproles till they realized he may actually really be too small.

In the end, I think they just draft someone.

Interesting but we can do much better.
Let's not settle anymore, be it HC, safety, WR or OL.

With judicious picks in the draft and FA we still have time to go to the Super Bowl within the two years window of opportunity we have left.

Chargers and running backs

by Michael Lombardi

Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that the Chargers are looking to move corner Antonio Cromartie for a running back or a draft pick -- or anything. The reality is that Cromartie has not played well in two years and has disappointed the Chargers. Because of that, the team won’t be offering him a long-term deal, so it would be prudent to try and trade him now before he becomes a total free agent. On the surface, the idea of a trade makes sense because the Chargers need a back -- which is going to then make it hard for LaDainian Tomlinson to gain employment elsewhere. But enough of LT. We’ve covered that issue. Let’s stay focused on the Chargers.

The Chargers need a back, and they want a big one who can carry the load down after down. In the Norv Turner offense, they need a back who can make teams fear the run, defend the run and open the play-action pass package. What made the Chargers’ downfield passing game so remarkable last year was that they were able to do it without any kind of running game and still got teams to defend the play action. With a bigger full-time back, they would be able to expand their offense and reduce the burden on their passing game.

Last year, the Chargers had only 155 runs of four yards or more, which placed them 28th in the NFL. (By the way, the worst team was the 49ers, who only had 136 such runs — so much for establishing the run as the foundation of your offense.) So without the ability to run the ball and get the down and distance in their favor, the Chargers were still able to move the ball well via the air. But they need a back and they know it -- and all of the NFL knows it as well.

Can they survive with Cromartie? Yes, they sure can. Since Cromartie had his 10-interception Pro Bowl season in 2007, he hasn’t been very effective. He has just five interceptions the past two years, has not been a force in the run game and has been very average in coverage. Based on a tape evaluation of Cromartie, it’s hard to justify paying him in the upper echelon of corners in the league, something he or his agent will not want to hear. Cromartie wants to be paid for those 10 picks and couldn’t care less that teams don’t view him as a shutdown corner.

As poorly as he has played, however, he’s still worth more than running back Marion Barber of the Cowboys. Barber looks closer to being done as a full-time player than he does to resurrecting his career. As the Chargers have learned with Tomlinson, once a back starts to fade, he never gets it back.

One thing’s for sure, this offseason is going to be filled with trades and trade rumors.

Michael Lombardi is a piece of trash. This guy has no clue what he's talking about. He's in the sport because of his name, same with Green who was/or is at ESPN.

I agree 'Slate' but no one wants Barber right now. Let's face facts, we're stuck with him and his fat contract. Sucks, but it's the truth of the matter.

I haven't exactly been Barber's biggest flag waver lately, but that is just ridiculous. He's not done, he's just not playing like he was two years ago. He could easily get it back. Look at Thomas Jones. They were saying he was done three years ago...

That being said, I'd still like to see more Choice than Barber at this point.

Barber for Cromartie makes sense.

Barber isn't done, he's slowed down, and a power back's life in the NFL is short. However, he did rush 214 times for 932 yards with 7TDs and an average of 4.4yards per carry. Not to shabby for an off year if you ask me. The main issue is the contract, and the fact that in a few years he will be done.

Cromartie has his issues, but honestly there are worst head-cases in the NFL, and in one point in time several of them played for the Cowboys at the same time. He has the skills to be a great FS, and while he hasn't given his best effort, he has shown people that he is a Probowl caliber player.

With that said, both teams could benefit from this trade. A Barber/Sproles combo would be sick, and a playmaking safety in the Cowboys secondary would be deadly (Jenkins and Cromartie alone could make QBs tremble and think twice for a questionable pass).

Having 7 kids irresponsibly is no laughing matter, but it's not like he killed someone...

Besides, he needs discipline, and there is leadership in the locker-room now (finally). Wade can fit him into the system, and honestly once motivated, Cromartie should excel in our defense.

Every trade has its risks, but right now, Barber's contract could pose a threat to signing other future FAs, etc...

I'm not a Cromartie homer, but he could be the safety we have been looking for. He's a bit raw, but afterall, it took Jenkins a year of serious improvement to get to where he is now. He's tall and rangy, if he could learn to watch film, he would make our defense unstoppable.

He has to much of an ego and his play doesn't warrant it.

San Diego is already trying to get rid of a back that is on the backside of his career.. Why would they want one in return? We're stuck with Barber.. Hopefully he regains his form..

Cromartie loses grievance

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 17, 2010 5:52 PM ET

Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie lost a grievance Wednesday filed by his former agent Jason Fletcher, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

NFL arbitrator Roger Kaplan ruled that Cromartie must pay Fletcher at least $32,000 in back fees.

The 2007 Pro Bowler is currently the subject of trade rumors despite a decent 2009 campaign.

Cromartie claimed in the grievance it was a financial hardship to pay the overdue fees, hinting at deeper monetary problems. Cromartie has seven children spread across five states and was named in at least five paternity suits, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

His current agent, Gary Wichard, said back in July all of the suits have been addressed. "It's all part of the simplification process," Wichard said. "Everyone will be taken care of."
