1. They have to deny it because they haven't met the "Rooney Rule" yet.

2. How in the hell would anyone want to coach with Parcells looking over their shoulder? I know Ireland wanted to be a GM and I don't blame him one bit for leaving, but it's GM in name only. I guess once Parcells bails on the 'fins, Jeff will be the full GM.

Exactly. And Mort is a Parcells mouthpiece, so he's going to put the word out that the hire isn't done yet.

SPARANO LEAKS COULD CREATE HUGE MESS

On Saturday night, we were told by a very good source that Fins football poobah Bill Parcells has made his decision as to the identity of the team's next head coach. Our source didn't know who the winner will be -- only that a winner has been chosen.

We assumed that the winner is Cowboys offensive line coach Tony Sparano, in light of rampant rumors and reports that Sparano will be the guy.

Meanwhile, the New Haven Register reports that Sparano, a New Haven native, has been offered the job -- and will accept it.

The fact that Sparano is from New Haven gives this report even more credibility; it's obvious to us that there's a connection between someone at the Register and Sparano or someone from his family. Our guess? Sparano made the mistake of telling someone, and that someone told someone else.

The problem? The Fins have yet to interview a minority candidate, and thus have not yet complied with the Rooney Rule.

And so it comes down to whether Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will go forward with Monday's scheduled interview. Several years ago, former Vikings head coach Dennis Green and Lions assistant Sherm Lewis refused to sit for the head-coaching job in Detroit after it had become clear on the league grapevine that CEO Matt Millen was going to hire Steve Mariucci.

Some would argue that a man of integrity would decline to meet with Parcells. Others would suggest that Frazier's overall career interests -- and thus the broader integrity of himself and his family -- require him to proceed with a hollow exercise. Now that Parcells really needs Frazier to interview for the job, Frazier has even greater leverage, and could parlay a decision to proceed into express or implied guarantees of future employment or other considerations.

As we've previously explained, the issue here isn't race but compliance with the rules. The Tuna's blatantly obvious desire to always do things his own way must yield at times to the requirements that apply to everyone, including him.

But, you see, if the Tuna hadn't extended an offer that he'll surely deny extending (and that Sparano surely has already indicated that he'll accept), then the Ravens or the Falcons might have extended such an offer.

Then there's the fact that, by league rule, an offer can't be made by anyone to Sparano until the season of Sparano's current team ends. But, hey, only the Patriots break the rules.

Frankly, Parcells screwed this one up by not getting Frazier interviewed before Sparano. But the process of interviewing guys like Frazier was delayed because Parcells needed to push back the firing of coach Cam Cameron in order to perpetrate the ruse that G.M. Jeff Ireland is calling the shots even though anyone with a pulse and a brain knows that the Tuna has the juice.

Also, Parcells should have made it abundantly clear to Sparano that there will be no leaks.

Maybe Parcells did. And maybe the fact that there was a leak will be enough to derail Sparano's candidacy. If, after all, Sparano can't be trusted to be discreet with critical information, he definitely can't be trusted with the routine secrets that a head coach needs to keep.

No one ever gets called on the Rooney rule anyway so this pathetic ruse should suffice fine, just enough pretending so that the NFL office can ignore it.

Right. Parcells offered Sparano the job. Sparano made the mistake of telling someone, and now Parcells is telling his puppet Moretnson to cover his arse. Funny, I thought Ireland was the GM and supposed to make the hire.

Actually Millen and/or Detroit were fined for non-compliance when they hired Mariucci

That goes to show you that the rule is BS. If a GM/owner wants a particular coach than that is who the GM/owner will hire regardless of the Rooney Rule that has been put in place to at least consider minority coaches.

They tried to comply, but since folks knew it was a sham interview, "minority" coaches declined to interview.

I doubt Jerry would be able to prove that Parcells is making the final decision on these things, given the way Parcells contract is written and I don't know if he would have any recourse.
However, and Im as big a critic of Jerry the GM as there is, I would bet he's watching the situation and the decisions being made in Miami very closely. Jerry didn't become a billionaire by being naive or stupid.

TUNA DENIES THAT SPARANO OFFER WAS MADE

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Dolphins football poobah Bill Parcells denies that the head-coaching position has been offered to Cowboys offensive line coach/assistant head coach Tony Sparano.

Though Mort, like most of the "real" media, doesn't mention the potential Rooney Rule implications of the report that position has been offered to Sparano before a minority candidate was interviewed, Mort correctly notes that league rules prohibit such offers to be made before the guy's current team is done for the year.

Mortensen also points out that the news of the Sparano offer might have been the result of panic from the Dolphins, due to the possibility that he prefers the Ravens job to the Dolphins gig.

And while Mort treated the two stories as separate, the fact that (per Mort) the Ravens violated league rules by bringing Sparano to Baltimore for his bye week interview might have given the Ravens a huge edge. Mort predicts that nothing will come of the Ravens' shenanigans because the Cowboys didn't object. But with the Fins honoring the rule that prevented them from bringing Sparano into the building and with the Ravens letting Sparano get a feel for the place where he would be working, we think it's a huge psychological edge for the Ravens.

Thus, the team that should be pissed about the fact that Sparano went to Baltimore is the Dolphins. But if the report is accurate that they've already offered the job to Sparano, they shouldn't be complaining about anything.

TUNA, SPARANO SHARE AN AGENT

Here's another level of intrigue that we confirmed by Googling the names "Sparano" and "Sexton."

Dolphins football poobah Bill Parcells and Cowboys assistant head coach Tony Sparano have the same agent.

We're not sure what this exactly means in connection with the ongoing controversy regarding whether Parcells has offered the head-coaching gig in Miami to Sparano, but it makes it highly unlikely that the agent is spreading untruths about the Miami situation in order to build leverage for his client elsewhere.

So either the reports are true -- or the team is putting out misinformation in order to scare off other suitors.

The Dolphins are calling a New Haven Register report that they've chosen Tony Sparano to be their next head coach "100 percent false."
"In fact, we have a number of interviews scheduled in the next few days," club spokesman Harvey Greene said. Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is known to be interviewing Monday. Former Ravens DC Rex Ryan, Jaguars assistant Mike Tice, and Cardinals OC Todd Haley are other candidates

but i thought everyone was dying to work with bill again? : )

i'd love to keep our success in tact, but since NFL is a business, this will happen and we all just have to keep going on.

Those guys will get nothing done there anyway. Fatso will be gone in 3-4 years, Ireland and Sporano will get canned after WH sells the team because they are a .500 team at best with no PO wins, just like Fatso did here.
