Growing up on a ranch in the Dakotas, people would dump unwanted cats in the country and they would go wild. I LOVED hunting them with a 12 gauge. Typical hick.

Yeehah, let's go shoot some domestic animals that have absolutely zero chance to defend themselves cuz I'm a real man!

Dont own either domestic animal currently, but if I were to have one it would be a dog.

I dont know what it is but I have never been a big fan of cats.

And dogs seem to be better learners.

Cats make me sneeze and my eyes tear.

I am with the "hick" ;)

So it's ok to kill things you're alergic to?

I'm allergic to babies, can I kill all babies I come across?

Cats are so much smarter then dogs its not even funny. Try and make them fetch a stick or something stupid like that, and the look of contempt they will give you is something to behold. Years ago I had a friend who swore he was going to teach his cat to do things; he tried for almost 6 months- total failure. It was funny as hell. Independent, take care of themselves, won't chase parked cars or bark at the moon- much prefer cats.

We've got both at my house. I happen to prefer cats.

It's a question of what you want. A cat won't likely pull you out of a burning building or chase off an intruder (like a chihuahua would be a big defense anyway). But dogs usually need more attention, especially young ones.

We had two great dogs, both around 40-50 pounds: one very friendly (boxer/spaniel), the other (otter hound mix) more nervous. They'd both mostly lay around, or sit next to you on the sofa; we had them for over 10 years. They were the sort you could leave in the house during the day, and they'd bark at strangers. Both were somewhat laid back, but the nervous one eventually got out and didn't come back, and the friendly one had a stroke and lost the will to live, so he had to be put down.

The cats I had got along fine with both. While I was working and out of town last year, the older cat ran off and didn't come back, so when I returned and changed jobs, 3/4 of the pets were gone. That was not a fun Christmas.

Now we have two younger dogs, both pretty excitable, and they've done more damage than all the previous pets combined. Curtains, blinds, canine accidents, chewing up stuff, you name it. Obviously they stay out during the day. They both want all the attention, one of them whines, so it's a wash. They'll improve, but it takes time. The remaining cat has taken a long time to get used to the new ones.

Not unlike what goes on here sometimes...

Well now... some would call it being useful....like a retriever..

dogs are useful and helpful and great company... there is a reason they are called man's best friend

cats and their owners are usually pretty full of themselves...also cat owners obviously have no nose or their nose is not used for smelling but to hold it in the air..

cats are for the most part lazy and contemptuous... they sometimes make decent enough rodent catchers...but can be easily replaced with something that doesn't constantly meander for food and throw up hairballs all over the place...

Dogs on the other hand earn their keep...

Her are a few famous Quotes

A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down.

Robert Benchley (1889–1945), U.S. humorous writer. Quoted in: Artemus Ward, His Book, Introduction (1964 ed.).

Dog. A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world’s worship.

Ambrose Bierce (1842–1914), U.S. author. The Devil’s Dictionary (1881–1906).

Extraordinary creature! So close a friend, and yet so remote.

Thomas Mann (1875–1955), German author, critic. Stories of Three Decades,“A Man and his Dog” (1930; first published 1919).

His friends he loved. His direst earthly foes —
Cats—I believe he did but feign to hate.
My hand will miss the insinuated nose,
Mine eyes the tail that wagg’d contempt at Fate.

Sir William Watson (1858–1935), British poet. An Epitaph.

Cats are autocrats of naked self-interest. They are both amoral and immoral, consciously breaking rules. Their “evil” look at such times is no human projection: the cat may be the only animal who savors the perverse or reflects upon it.

Camille Paglia (b. 1947), U.S. author, critic, educator. Sexual Personae, ch. 2 (1990).

One cat in a house is a sign of loneliness, two of barrenness, and three of sodomy.

Edward Dahlberg (1900–1977), U.S. author, critic. Alms for Oblivion,“Moby-Dick: A Hamitic Dream” (1964).

Obviously you either had low rent cats or know nothing of them. My mother has had cats all her life; probably 10-15 of them by now; and NONE of them fit your so called description. They all went after any mouse they could find; they were all affectionate but independent, and they were all good company except one who was a real *****.

I only hate the stray cats that my neighbor feeds, who like to live in my yard because there's more sun. I'll admit, the arrogant way they look at me when I get home from work and dare to step on "their" yard makes me want to go "hick" on them. Instead, I've just been working on catching them and taking them to the humane society.

I don't like cats, in general, unless they'll stop being jerks and let you pet them when YOU want to pet them, and not stick their butts in your face if you're lying on the floor, but it's ok if Bill does.

I am laughing at these anti cat stories; pretty much nothing described has ever happened with any of our cats. BUT I think another great thing about cats is that they sense when someone does not like them and therefore do their best to piss them off.

Parcells: I'm a cat guy

Known for their contentious style, Seattle reporters asked Bill Parcells on Wednesday if he liked cats or dogs.

Bill said he owns a 16-pound cat named Cody and proceeded to explain how "athletic" the animal was.

Made me think of this moment in The Godfather.

I've always heard that Brando saw that cat wandering around the set and decided to put it in his lap.

Oh, and Mario Puzo hated that cat scene.

I've never owned a cat, I've had three Rottweilers as an adult and my dad raised Dobermans when we was growing up, so i'm partial to K-9s. But,my cousin rented my garage while he was in school had a cat and I have to admit he did have this independent nature that was admirable at times, but it also was somewhat annoying as well, I honestly think that cat thought he was the King of the castle.
